Sixth-Graders Moved By Mission of Set Free Alliance

In mid-November, as part of the Sixth Grade Academy’s Terrific Tuesday activities and its Altruism in Action program, students heard from Set Free Alliance Program Director Andrew Hendricks about the transformative work of the organization.

While spreading God’s message in India and Africa, Set Free Alliance representatives found that it was difficult for people to understand God’s unconditional love while lacking basic human needs, such as fresh water. By digging wells and providing clean drinking water, they realized that people were more receptive to their message.

At the same time, they learned that, sadly, many children in these countries were being taken from their families and forced into slavery to work in slate and brick mines. As a result, Set Free Alliance set out to address both issues.

Now, these villages are enjoying the life-giving benefits of clean water while their children are enjoying life-changing experiences: being rescued from slavery, given medical attention, provided educational opportunities and given a chance to learn a trade.

One of the trades being taught is tailoring. Young girls in the program use donated fabric to hand sew stuffed elephants (fondly named Wellas). The girls then sell the Wellas and donate the money earned to rescue other children being held in slavery, thus breaking a cycle of misery in favor of hope. Another portion of the money raised is used to dig wells in their communities.

The sixth-graders were incredibly moved by the presentation. In particular, they were surprised to learn that child slavery still exists, and they unanimously expressed their desire to help.

Thus, we will be selling these elephants to raise money for a new well in India. If you would like to help us, you may purchase one (large for $15, small for $10) by contacting any of the sixth grade teachers by email or by visiting Mrs. Shapiro in the Academy.
