SJCS Varsity Girls Hammer High Point; Boys Lose to Grizzlies

Evie Adams scored 17 points and the SJCS Varsity girls cruised to a 52-32 victory over visiting High Point Academy in a Region 1-1A game Friday night.

Harper Greer and Tiffany Helmer contributed nine and eight points, respectively, for the Knights (14-8, 4-1), who remained one game behind Southside Christian (4-0) in the loss column.

With the Knights leading 5-2 in the first quarter, Adams scored on a fast break, Lola Kelly converted a 3-point play after a turnover and Ava Catherine Elder hit a shot from the free-throw line that made it 12-2.

Caroline Mruz knocked down a 3-pointer to begin the second quarter, and St. Joe's continued to pull away, leading 27-6 by halftime.

Mruz finished with six points. Elder had four points, Kelly and Adelia Stefanik three points apiece and Stella Nash two points.

Varsity Boys

High Point Academy rallied from 12 points down in the fourth quarter and beat the SJCS Varsity boys 42-39 Friday night.

Owen Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Knights a 6-0 lead, and the Grizzlies never led until there was 3:05 left in the game.

Matteo Mazza, who led St. Joe's with 11 points, scored on a drive to make it 31-21 at the end of the third quarter and again on a drive to make it 33-21 early in the fourth quarter.

High Point then went on a 14-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer that gave the Grizzlies their first lead at 35-34.

Mazza hit 1 of 2 from the line to pull the Knights even at 35-35, and Owen Smith's 3-pointer brought St. Joe's to within 39-38 with 38 seconds remaining. But High Point increased its lead to 42-39, and the Knights (17-6, 1-4) missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left.

Owen Smith had nine points, and Smith Crick and Jaylen Townsend each had six points. Brogan Poole had four points, Juan Montoya had two points and Carter Bears had one point.
