Varsity Girls Defeat Southside Christian, Earn Region's Top Seed
The SJCS Varsity girls basketball team left no doubt as to who is the top seed from Region 1.
The Knights, co-champions with Southside Christian, cruised to a 56-20 victory over the Sabres in a tiebreaker game Friday night at Brashier Middle College.
St. Joe's (18-8) will begin the Class 1A playoffs at home at 7:00 pm Tuesday against Calhoun County (9-9), the fourth-place finisher out of Region 4.
The winner will advance to play the winner of No. 3 Dixie at No. 2 McBee on Friday night. If the Knights win, they will play at home again in the second round.
It's the first time St. Joe's has earned the No. 1 seed since 2014, which is the last time the Knights advanced to the state final. They were runners-up that year and in 2011.
Against Southside Christian, Adelia Stefanik scored 17 points for the Knights, who played stifling defense in the second half.
St. Joe's led 26-18 after two quarters and then held the Sabres to two points after halftime, blanking them in the third quarter. Stefanik hit four 3-pointers in the second half, during which the Knights outscored the Sabres 30-2.
Evie Adams had 11 points, and Stella Nash had eight points. Harper Greer had six points, Tiffany Helmer five, Ava Catherine Elder three and Lola Kelly, Caroline Mruz and Emi Reese Hand two points apiece.
