Varsity Girls Defeat CCES, Earn Return Trip to Upper State Final

The SJCS Varsity girls basketball team is headed back to the Upper State championship game.

The Knights defeated rival Christ Church for the third time this season Wednesday night, knocking off the visiting Cavaliers 59-42 in the third round of the Class 1A playoffs.

St. Joe's (21-8) will play Denmark-Olar (24-3) in Florence at 2:00 PM Monday at the Florence Center in a rematch of last year's Upper State final. The Vikings won a year ago, 52-38, in a game played at Bob Jones University's Davis Field House.

Military Magnet plays Lake View in the Lower State final. The winners will meet in the state final at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 2 at the Florence Center.


The teams remaining were four of the top six in the final South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association rankings; Military Magnet was No. 1, Denmark-Olar No. 2, Lake View No. 3 and St. Joe's No. 6.

Against Christ Church, the Knights fell behind early, but they recovered quickly, led 14-12 by the end of the first quarter and had a 31-21 lead by halftime. Six different players scored for St. Joe's in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Tiffany Helmer, Lola Kelly and Adelia Stefanik each scored four points, and the Knights stretched their advantage to 45-30.

Kelly finished with 17 points, Stefanik with 15 and Helmer with 11. Chloe Duncan and Evie Adams each had six points, and Harper Greer had four points.
