Varsity Boys Honor Seniors, Defeat BMC to Take Third Place
The SJCS Varsity boys basketball team honored its three seniors -- Matteo Mazza, Gabe Nelson and Brogan Poole -- before Thursday night's game against visiting Brashier Middle College.
Then the Knights took the court and defeated the Bengals 40-34 to clinch third place in Region 1-1A.
St. Joe's (19-7, 3-5) will begin the playoffs on the road next Wednesday against the runner-up from Region 4.
Against BMC, the Knights fell behind 10-2 but then scored 11 points in a row to take a 13-10 halftime lead. After a 3-pointer by Jaylen Townsend, they led 30-18 heading into the final quarter.
BMC began the fourth with a 9-0 run, cutting the margin to three, and the Bengals were within 34-32 with 1:23 left. Owen Smith drew a charge, and Townsend hit two free throws to make it 36-32.
BMC pulled within two again, and Townsend made 1 of 2 from the line to give the Knights a 37-34 advantage with 21 seconds to go. Poole hauled in a huge rebound at the defensive end and then nailed a pair of free throws to give the Knights a 39-34 lead with 11 seconds left.
Townsend finished with 12 points. Mazza had 10 points, and Carter Bears contributed eight points. Owen Smith had four points, and Nelson, Poole and Bryson Smith each had two points.
Junior Varsity Boys
Sam Covington scored 18 points, Will Saunders added 15 points, and the JV Knights wrapped up their season with a 51-39 win over BMC.
Covington and Saunders each had four 3-pointers. Jack Stewart had nine points, Pierce Jones had seven points and Barrett Barnhill had two points.
