Roundup: Boys & Girls Lacrosse, Boys & Girls Soccer, Track & Field

Brendan Alvis scored seven goals, and the SJCS Varsity boys lacrosse team defeated Hillcrest 12-3 Friday night.

Garrett Greer and Walker Wolfram each had two goals and Mills McCauley scored once for the host Knights, who improved to 2-0.

McCauley opened the scoring with an assist from Greer, and Greer scored to make it 2-0. Alvis and Wolfram then combined to score three times in 41 seconds near the end of the first quarter to help the Knights take command.

Alvis scored with 1:10 left in the quarter; Alvis scored with an assist from Wolfram 26 seconds later; and then Wolfram scored with 29 seconds remaining to give the Knights a 5-0 lead.

Alvis scored four more times in the second quarter, and the Knights led 11-1 at halftime.

  • The JV Knights lost to Hillcrest, 11-4.
  • The Varsity girls (0-3) lost at Blythewood on Thursday night, 16-3.

Boys Soccer

The SJCS Varsity boys soccer team, No. 1 in the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association preseason rankings, blanked Hammond 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Martin Simon scored the only goal in the match, with an assist from Daniel Leon-Osorio.

The JV Knights also won, 6-0.

The previous weekend, the Varsity Knights won two of three matches in the Mill Town Invitational in Fort Mill.

The Knights opened their season with a 7-0 victory over Class 4A Hartsville. Davidson Chou had four goals, and Thomas Flannigan, Dominik Leon-Osorio and Lucas Rivera each scored once. Chou, Flannigan, Simon, Liam Montes, Dominik Leon-Osorio and Torsten Gruenefeld each contributed an assist.

The Knights also blanked 5A Rock Hill, 4-0. Chou had a goal and two assists, Patrick Kucaba had a goal and an assist and Luka Kucinic and Johnny Bunecke scored a goal apiece for St. Joe's.

The Knights lost their final game in the tournament, 1-0 against Catawba Ridge.

Girls Soccer

The SJCS Varsity girls soccer team (No. 4 in 1A/2A) opened its season by splitting a pair of matches in the Generals Cup at Wade Hampton; the Knights defeated Easley 3-1 and lost to the host Generals 4-2.

This past weekend, the Knights competed in the prestigious Viking Cup, which annually gathers many of the top programs in the state to Spring Valley High School.

The Knights began by beating Bishop England (No. 3 in 1A/2A) 3-2 on penalty kicks. Then the Knights lost 4-0 against Mauldin (No. 5 in 5A) and 5-0 against Indian Land (No. 5 in 4A).

Track & Field

The SJCS Varsity track and field team competed in the Frank Kleckner Invitational at Southside Christian School on Saturday.

In the boys meet, the Knights' Jacob Reed finished third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Liam Novak was runner-up in the 3,200, Burke Moorman fourth in the 1,600, Paul Norman fourth in the high jump and Nick Passerrello fourth in the discus.

Nick Franchina, Lucas Salgado, Matt Patterson and Eliot Power came in second in the 4x100 relay.

On the girls side, Odette Brown, Bia Hamilton and Francie Thompson took third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400.

The Knights' relay teams finished first (Odette Brown, Daniela Fernandez, Hamilton and Thompson) and second (Caroline Powers, Bijou Laguerre, Nina Brown and Rory Clements) in the 4x800 relay.
