Knights' Victory is No. 200 for Coach Paul at St. Joseph's
The SJCS Varsity boys basketball team defeated host Greenville Home School 52-40 Monday night, giving Paul Assinesi his 200th victory as coach of the Knights.
Coach Paul, in his 15th season at St. Joseph's, has led the Knights to three region championships, to the playoffs 13 times and to an Upper State final berth. He's been Region Coach of the Year six times.
His current team is 6-0 after Smith Crick led a balanced attack with 10 points in the win over the Hurricanes.
Nine players scored in all for the Knights, and eight scored in the first half, which ended with St. Joe's ahead 34-17.
The Hurricanes closed the gap to 38-31 after three quarters, but the Knights preserved the victory by making 10 of 11 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. For the game, they were 20 of 25 from the line.
Brogan Poole scored nine points, and Bryson Smith, Matteo Mazza and Gabe Nelson each had six points. Jaylen Townsend had five points, Owen Smith had four points, and Juan Montoya and Carter Bears had three points apiece.
- The Varsity girls (4-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped, losing to the Hurricanes, 56-39.
- The Middle School teams both defeated Southside Christian at home Monday, the girls winning 26-20 and the boys beating the Sabres 44-15.
