Knights Honored With Bridge Builders Excellence Awards

SJCS senior Johnny Jaraczewski has been announced as a semifinalist and junior William Gillespie as a nominee for the 2024 Bridge Builder Excellence Awards.

With the support of South Carolina businesses the Spinx Corporation and Parham, Smith, and Archenhold LLC,. Attorneys at Law, these student-athlete awards honor and encourage excellence in the community, in the classroom and on the field.

The top three finalists and eventual winner will be announced later and be invited to attend the SCFHOF 11th Annual Enshrinement Event on April 18 at the Hotel Hartness. The finalists' attendance will be free to them, thanks to gifts in honor of William B. Sturgis and from SCFHOF Class of 2022 Inductee Joe Bostic.

The award criteria is as follows:

  • Football excellence: 40 percent
  • Academics (minimum 3.2 core GPA): 30 percent
  • Exemplary school, character, community citizenship and leadership: 30 percent

Each statewide nominee will receive a certificate of recognition for his accomplishments, be invited to participate in College and Decision Day at the statehouse on May 7 be invited to celebrate #BBEA24Day on May 22 on his social media platforms.

In addition, the 10 semifinalists will be invited to share their stories on the SCFHOF Sports & Leadership Podcast with SCFHOF Chairman David Wyatt.

The Top 10 boast an average GPA of 4.4, give back to their communities and are playing college football in the fall.

Johnny, a three-time All-Region linebacker and an All-State selection, holds the school single-season tackle record (159 total tackles), earned 2022 Team Defensive MVP and was the 2023 state quarterfinal Greenville News Player of the Week.

In the classroom, Johnny received top scores on his AP Exams and is a member of four different honor societies, including the National English, Math and Science Honor Societies. Additionally, he was the 2023 University of Rochester Bausch+Lomb Honorary Science Award recipient and West Point Leadership Award recipient. Jaraczewski will be taking his academic and athletic talents to Wofford College.
