JV Girls Basketball Team Wins Sixth Straight; Boys Fall Short

The SJCS Junior Varsity girls basketball team extended its winning streak to six games by beating rival Christ Church 27-17 on Thursday night.

Bia Hamilton and Lillie Mendelson each scored six points for the host Knights, who improved to 10-4.

St. Joe's led 14-2 after Lili Franek scored with 2:32 remaining in the first half. Christ Church went on a 9-0 run that ended when Mia Stewart hit a shot from just inside the top of the key with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, making it 16-11.

Hamilton added two free throws before the end of the quarter to give the Knights an 18-11 lead.

Christ Church was still within 19-15 with 2:52 to go, but Ava Wright scored inside, Mendelson scored on a put-back and Wright scored again to make it 25-16 with just over a minute left.

Franek finished with five points. Wright and Rachel Overton each had four points, and Stewart had two points.

Junior Varsity Boys

Christ Church put together a big second-half run and defeated the SJCS JV boys 38-32 on Thursday night.

Barrett Barnhill, who led the Knights with 12 points, grabbed a rebound and banked in a short turnaround shot to give St. Joe's a 23-20 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

The Cavaliers then outscored the Knights 14-2, a run that ended nearly eight minutes later when Jack Stewart fought for a rebound and scored, pulling St. Joe's to within 34-27 with 2:37 remaining.

Stewart scored on a drive with two minutes left to make it 36-39. Sam Covington's 3-pointer brought the final margin to 38-32.

Stewart and Will Saunders each had six points for the Knights (6-7). Pierce Jones had five points, and Covington had three points.
