6th Grade, Middle School Boys Win Diocesan State Titles
The SJCS Middle School and 6th Grade boys won state championships Sunday in the 2024 Diocese of Charleston Youth Basketball Tournament hosted by St. Mary's in Greenville.
The 6th Grade boys (10-0) defeated Christ Our King/Finley (45-23), Charleston Catholic (48-25) and St. Francis of Hilton Head (45-9) in pool play; and then beat Christ Our King/Chapman (45-9) to reach the final.
Then the Knights rolled to a 52-17 victory over Christ Our King/Ackerman at Southside High School to win the Junior Boys Division championship.
The Middle School Knights (17-3) went 2-1 in pool play, beating St. Andrew Catholic (57-23), losing to John Paul II (42-35) and bouncing back to defeat Blessed Sacrament/Embry (72-30).
The Knights advanced to the semifinals with a 45-28 win Our Lady of the Rosary and then avenged the loss to John Paul II with a 45-29 victory. They edged St. Mary's 45-43 to win the Senior Boys Division championship.
The 6th Grade and Middle School girls also fared well in the tournament.
The 6th Grade girls (8-1) went 3-0 in pool play, defeating St. Anne Catholic (39-0), St. Gregory the Great Catholic (24-6) and St. Michael Catholic (21-8); and then losing to Christ Our King/Bischoff (21-8) in the semifinals.
The Middle School girls (11-7) went 2-1 in pool play, with wins against Charleston Catholic (35-22) and St. Mary Magdalene/Retterg (37-19) and a loss to John Paul II (25-24). The Knights beat OLR (38-23) to reach the semifinals but then lost to St. Mary's (44-21) in the championship game.
CMSC Tournament
The 6th Grade teams will compete in the Carolina Middle School Conference Tournament Friday at Spartanburg Day School.
Both the SJCS girls and boys will play in the semifinals Friday, the girls at 4:00 PM and the boys at 5:00. If they win, the finals also would be Friday, the girls at 6:00 and the boys at 7:00.
