Matthew Marchal ('19) went the distance and struck out a career-high 15 to lead No. 3 seed Wofford to a 6-1 victory over No. 6 UNCG in the first round of the Southern Conference Championship presented by Holston Gases Thursday afternoon at Fluor Field.

Marchal, in his first career complete game, allowed only an unearned run, three hits and one walk. He did not allow a hit until Daniel Cerda singled with one out in the seventh inning.

Marchal lost his shutout with two outs in the ninth, when Caleb Cozart doubled to score Mitchell Smith, who had reached on a passed ball after a strikeout to lead off the inning.

Marchal improved to 11-3 to match Wofford's single-season victory record. He has posted a record of 18-5 over the last two seasons.

Wofford is scheduled to play at 7:30 tonight at Fluor Field in a winners' bracket game against No. 2 Mercer.
