SJCS Girls Take Second at State Track and Field Meet

The SJCS girls team finished as state runner-up in the Class A Track and Field Championships Monday at Lower Richland High School in Hopkins.
Whale Branch won with 78 points. The Knights were second out of 27 teams with 60 points, a half-point ahead of Christ Church and one point in front of Hannah-Pamplico.
The Knights' Odette Brown won the state championship in the 800, leading a trio of St. Joe's placers in the event. Nina Brown was runner-up, and Beatrice Hamilton took sixth.
The Knights also had three of the top six in the 1,600, as Nina Brown was fourth, Hamilton fifth and Odette Brown sixth.
Maja Wright placed in three individual events, taking fifth in the 400 hurdles, seventh in the 100 hurdles and eighth in the long jump. Harper Greer placed third in the high jump.
Hamilton, Nina Brown, Odette Brown and Danielle Launius teamed to take second in the 4x800 relay, and Hamilton, Wright, Nina Brown and Francie Thompson placed third in the 4x400 relay.
The St. Joe's boys were eighth out of 32 teams.
Chris Johnson took fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 100. Chappell Martin was fourth in the 3,200, and Liam Novak finished sixth in the 1,600.
The team of Martin, Novak, Chase Hopkins and Jonathan Kissel came in seventh in the 4x800 relay.

It marks the first time the SJCS girls have finished as runners-up since placing second three years in a row from 2014 through 2016.
