SJCS Boys Golf Team Takes Third at State
The SJCS boys golf team finished third in the state after shooting a season-best 319 Tuesday in the final round of the Class AA State Tournament at Newberry Country Club.
The Knights came in at 646 — just one shot behind state runner-up Central Pageland in the 14-team field.
With rounds of 76 and 75, Henry Hall finished in eighth place and made the all-state team.
Cade Hagan led the way for the Knights on the second day, shooting 2-under-par 34 on the final nine holes, capped with a birdie on the last hole.
Hagan finished at 79. Joey Clary and Everett Babcock registered 83 and 82, respectively, to round out the team’s scoring.
The first day, Clary shot 75, Hall 76, C.J. Sahlman 87, and Hagan 89 for a team total of 327. The Knights, facing an eight-shot deficit against Central Pageland, made up all but one stroke in the final round.
Clary’s 158 was good for 11th place in the tournament.
“We have much to be thankful for this season — undefeated in matches with a 14-0-1 record, region champion, and a third-place finish in the state,” said SJCS coach Ted Coia. “Perhaps most of all, we returned to competition and a full season despite a pandemic threatening the landscape. The game of golf proved resilient, and the Knights met the challenge.”
