SJCS Varsity Teams, JV Boys Sweep Southside Christian
The SJCS Varsity boys basketball team turned the game around in the second half and defeated Southside Christian 38-31 in front of an energetic home crowd Friday night.
The Knights, who rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit, improved to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in Region 1-1A.
St. Joe's outscored the Sabres 9-0 in the third quarter to draw even at 22-22 entering the fourth quarter. Hunter Coleman converted a 3-point play to put the Knights on top.
After a SCS basket, Coleman made 1 of 1 from the line, Alex Gillespie scored and Davis Satterfield and Gillespie each made a pair of free throws, capping a 10-2 run that gave the Knights a 32-24 lead with 2:14 remaining.
The Sabres closed to within 34-31 with 30 seconds left, but Josh Burns hit two free throws and then made a steal and layup to clinch the victory.
Gillespie finished with 16 points, and Burns added 12 points. Coleman had five points, Satterfield and Gabe Nelson each had two points and Bryson Smith had one point.
The Knights' defense and hustle at both ends enabled them to tie the score in the third quarter.
Gillespie was fouled on a put-back and completed the 3-point play and then was fouled while shooting and made 1 of 2.
Burns made a steal and went the length of the court to score; Gillespie made a nice spin move inside; and then Burns hit 1 of 2 from the line to make it 22-22, setting up a big fourth quarter for the Knights.
The Varsity girls used a 19-2 third-quarter run to break the game open and went on to a 51-39 victory over Southside Christian Friday night.
The Knights led 20-14 at halftime, and the Sabres scored the first basket of the second half. That's when the Knights set sail on a surge that put them in command.
Ginny Anne Dumont hit two free throws, scored on a drive and then converted a 3-point play. She made a steal that led to a basket by Raquel Monterrosa and then another steal that led to a free throw by Tiffany Helmer.
Helmer fed Dumont on a break, and Dumont delivered a nice entry pass to Monterrosa for a basket that capped a 16-0 run.
After the Sabres ended the run, Helmer knocked down a 3-pointer, and Elaina Mulholland scored inside, giving the Knights a 39-18 lead with 2:32 left in the third quarter.
Dumont finished with 14 points, five steals and four rebounds for the Knights (9-7, 1-2). Helmer had 11 points, and Monterrosa had 10 points and seven boards.
Adelia Stefanik had eight points and four rebounds. Lola Kelly had three points, three rebounds and three steals, and Mulholland had two points and six rebounds. Caroline Mruz had two points, and Chloe Duncan had one point.
The JV boys turned a close game into a lopsided one by halftime and beat Southside Christian 52-28 on Friday.
With the score 9-9 late in the first quarter, the Knights outscored the Sabres 18-1 the rest of the half.
Owen Smith made two 3-pointers and went 4 of 4 from the line during the run, and Paul Norman also hit a 3-pointer.
Smith finished with 16 points, and Carter Bears added 11 points. Nolan Green had seven points and Norman five points.
Tony Shenouda scored four points, Caleb Hood three points and Charlie Walters, Phil Adil and Garrett Greer two points apiece.
- On Saturday, the JV boys played in the Chapman tournament. In the first game of the day, the Knights lost a hard-fought, 44-42 decision against Broome.
Bears had 15 points, Smith 12 points (on four 3-pointers) and Shenouda seven points.
The Knights lost the second game against Chapman, 49-27. Bears had eight points and Shenouda five points.
The JV girls also competed in the Chapman tournament. They posted a big victory in the first game, defeating Boiling Springs 42-17, and then lost to host Chapman.
**The Middle School teams will host Langston Charter today, the girls tipping off at 4:00 PM and the boys at 5:15. The JV boys and both Varsity teams will play at home Tuesday against Brashier Middle College. The JV boys will begin at 5:00 PM, followed by the Varsity girls at 6:30 and the Varsity boys at 8:00.
