CCES Tops Varsity Teams; Girls' Rally Falls Short

The CCES Varsity girls basketball team pushed Christ Church to the limit, but the host Cavaliers held on for a 50-44 victory in a Region 1-1A game Friday night.

Ginny Anne Dumont poured in 27 points for the Knights, who trailed 15-5 after one quarter and then gradually closed in on the Cavaliers, who are coming off a 2A state championship.

Dumont scored 18 points in the second half as St. Joe's chipped away at the lead. She had seven points, Lola Kelly had four and Elaina Mulholland and Raquel Monterrosa each had two points in the fourth quarter, and the Knights were within 47-44 with two minutes remaining.

But the Knights were unable to score again. They dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in the region.

Monterrosa finished with eight points. Kelly and Mulholland had four points each, and Tiffany Helmer had one point.

Varsity Boys

The Varsity boys were within two points early in the second half, but Christ Church pulled away by the end of the third quarter and beat the Knights 51-30.

When Davis Satterfield nailed a 3-pointer, the Knights trailed by just 24-22 with 6:17 left in the third quarter. However. The Cavaliers responded with a 16-1 run and ended the quarter with a 40-23 advantage.

Josh Burns led the Knights with 12 points, and Satterfield had eight points. Alex Gillespie had five points, Hunter Coleman and Juan Montoya each had two and Bryson Smith had one point.

Burns had 10 points -- including three 3-pointers -- in the first quarter, which ended with Christ Church ahead 14-12.

The Cavs had stretched the lead to eight, but Gillespie got free inside for a basket and then made 1 of 2 from the line a minute later, keeping the Knights within 22-17 at halftime.
