Roundup: Varsity Basketball Teams Win Region Openers
Josh Burns scored 13 points, Jalen Gibson added 12 points and the SJCS Varsity boys basketball team held off visiting Brashier Middle College for a 48-41 win Tuesday night.
The Bengals pulled to within 42-39 with 2:33 remaining, but Burns and Davis Satterfield each hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the victory in the Knights' Region 2-2A opener.
St. Joe's opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run. Burns hit a 3-pointer, Sandon Brown scored on a put-back and Gibson made a pull-up jumper in the lane, turning a one-point halftime deficit into a 31-25 lead.
Liam Green scored eight points for the Knights. Brown finished with seven points, Satterfield with six points, and Alex Gillespie had two points.
Ginny Anne Dumont hit four 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and the SJCS Varsity girls opened their region schedule with a 49-14 win over Brashier Middle College.
The Knights, leading 14-7 at halftime, broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Bengals 16-7. Dumont had eight points in the quarter, Chloe Duncan scored four points and Clare McKinley and Salome Schmitt each had a field goal.
The Knights then outscored the Bengals 19-0 in the fourth quarter.
The SJCS JV boys basketball team scored the first 17 points and went on to a 54-31 win over Brashier Middle College Tuesday night.
The Bengals did not score until the 5:22 mark of the second quarter and never came within fewer than 11 points after that.
Brogan Poole led the Knights with 17 points, and Gabe Nelson added 12 points. Bryson Smith and Henry Dryden each scored seven points.
Cole Alt had three points, and Paul Chambers, Asher Wynn, Brayden Johnson and Liam Okuley had two points apiece.
Middle School Girls
Lily Del Collo scored 11 points and the SJCS Middle School girls breezed to a 38-17 win at Hampton Park on Tuesday.
Emme Cook and Olivia Varn each contributed eight points for the Knights.
On Friday, Cook scored 14 points to lead the Knights to a 38-4 win over visiting Southside Christian.
Del Collo and Cason McCall each scored seven points, including a 3-pointer. Evie Adams had four points, and Lily Stravolo and Anna Quesnell had two points each.
Middle School Boys
The SJCS MS boys came up just short against Southside Christian and Hampton Park, losing by three at Hampton Park and by one against Southside Christian.
In the Knights' 37-36 loss to Southside Christian on Friday, Henry Dryden hit a pair of free throws with 1:02 left to cut the Sabres' lead to 35-33.
After the Sabres scored a basket, Smith Crick nailed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to make it 37-36. The Knights made a stop but missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Hampton Norwood scored nine points, and Crick had eight points for the Knights. Daniel Leon-Osorio had six points, Sam Covington and Pierce Jones four points each, Hampton Renfrow three points and Charlie Walters two points.
Tonight, the SJCS wrestling team will be at home for the only time this season, hosting a tri-match against Chesnee and Christ Church at 6:30 PM. Before the match, the Knights' seniors will be recognized.
The SJCS 6th Grade girls basketball team will play Langston Charter at Rocky Creek Baptist Church at 4:00 PM.
The JV basketball teams will host Greer Middle College, with the girls playing at 6:30 PM and the boys at 7:45.
