Melina Norton earns All-State, Sportsmanship honors

SJCS senior Melina Norton earned All-State honors with her performance in the SCHSL Class 3A/2A/1A individual state tennis tournament November 8-9 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis center in Florence.

In the main draw, Melina defeated Union County's Mary Kathryn James, 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Waccamaw's Ansley-Aimee Flowers, 6-2, 6-2.

In the consolations, Melina beat Hannah-Pamlico's Katelyn Fennell, 8-0, and then registered a huge victory in the round of 16 over Waccamaw's Addison Flowers, 8-7, in a tie-break that moved her into Tuesday's matches and qualified her for the All-State distinction.

In Tuesday's quarterfinals, Melina defeated Elizabeth Williams (8-2), who had just been competing in Columbia on Chapman's Class 3A state runner-up team. Melina then lost 8-5 against Ansley-Aimee Flowers, the same girl who knocked her out of the main draw, although the match was much closer.

Melina also received the Sportsmanship Award for players in the Class 2A and 1A classifications.

This past weekend, Melina competed in the North-South All-Star Match in Myrtle Beach. She was one of just 12 players chosen from across the state in all five classifications.

Congratulations to Melina!
