Varsity Girls Remain Unbeaten in Region Play

The SJCS Varsity girls basketball team scored the game's first 27 points and breezed to a 68-13 win over visiting Powdersville on Friday night.

Evie Adams scored 16 points for the Knights (13-6, 6-0), who remained unbeaten and in sole possession of first place in Region 2-3A. Tiffany Helmer -- recognized for her banner in the rafters following the game -- and Lola Kelly each scored 14 points.

The Patriots scored their first points with five seconds left in the first quarter, and the Knights led 46-4 at halftime.

Macy Caldwell and Eliza Carter each scored five points; Kaia Jacoby, Emi Reese Hand and Stella Nash had four points apiece; and Londyn Woods had two points.

Nash and Adams each had five rebounds. Adams had five assists and Helmer had four. Kelly had six of the Knights' 23 steals, and Adams had four.

The Varsity boys' fourth-quarter rally came up short, and Powdersville held on for a 45-39 victory Friday night.

The Knights (14-3, 4-2), who trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, closed the gap with a 10-0 run that began late in the third quarter.

Sam Patterson began the surge by driving the left baseline to make it 37-27 with 2:12 left in the quarter. Deux Greene scored on a break and then hit a pull-up shot in the lane, and the Patriots' lead was down to 37-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

A drive by Patterson and another by Smith Crick pulled the Knights to within 37-35 with 5:09 remaining.

Powdersville interrupted the Knights' run and pushed the lead back to four, but Patterson came right back and scored on a drive. The Patriots responded, and then Greene hit two free throws to make it 41-39 with 1:43 left.

However, St. Joe's failed to score again, and the Patriots went 4 for 4 from the line down the stretch.

Patterson finished with 10 points, Greene with nine points and Carl Harrison with eight points. Carter Bears had six points, Caleb Hood had four and Crick had two points.

Junior Varsity Boys

Powdersville had a big fourth quarter and rallied to beat the JV Knights, 35-27.

The Patriots ended the third quarter with a 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull within 23-22 and then outscored the Knights 13-4 in the fourth.

Jay Sanders had 11 points and six rebounds for the Knights (9-4), and Julian Cordi had six points and six boards.

Barrett Barnhill had four points, and Noah Ball, Johnny Dias and Deniym Wilkins each had two points. Zander Estevez had four rebounds.
