Soccer Sweeps Palmetto; Softball Routs Carolina

Torsten Gruenefeld scored two goals and the SJCS Varsity boys soccer team remained unbeaten with a 5-0 victory over visiting Palmetto in a Region 2-3A match Thursday night.

Andrew Moore-King, Jonny Bunecke and Charlie Zacher each added a goal for the Knights, who improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the region.

Bunecke, Evan Farrell and Charlie Baker each contributed an assist for the Knights, who have outscored their first six opponents 25-3.

JV Boys Soccer

The JV Knights also maintained their unbeaten record, improving to 4-0 with a 2-1 win over Palmetto.

Varsity Girls Soccer

The Varsity girls edged host Palmetto 1-0 in a Region 2 game on Thursday night.

After a 0-0 first half, the Knights broke on top when Lola Kelly scored on a header off an assist from Taylor Hargett.

The Knights are 5-0 and 2-0 in the region.

JV Girls Soccer

Johanna Gruenefeld scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the JV Knights to a 5-0 win at Palmetto on Thursday night.

Mary Bradford Brown scored one goal and assisted on another, and Alyssa Bunecke and Olivia Hood each scored a goal for the Knights. Darby Barker, Fernanda Meneses and Logan Hand each had an assist.

Softball

Stella Nash hit an inside-the-park grand slam and Addie Murphy added a solo inside-the-park homer in a 12-run first, and the Knights cruised to a 24-0, victory over visiting Carolina High on Thursday.

Murphy threw a no-hitter for the second consecutive game, having no-hit Brashier Middle College in five innings on Monday. She struck out nine. She also went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

Stella Nash scored four runs, and Nora Nash was 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Adrienne Falk was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Addi Gregory had a double, knocked in four runs and scored twice.

Also for the Knights (5-1), Lilli Painter had two RBIs and scored three runs and Sloan Greer drove in two runs and scored twice.

First baseman Nora Nash also pulled off an unassisted triple play. After the first two batters in the third inning walked for the Trojans, Mikayla Barrett hit a line drive to Nash.

With both baserunners on the move, Nash tagged the runner in front of her and then ran to second and stepped on the base for the third out.
