Roundup: Varsity Soccer Teams Sweep Palmetto

Charlie Zacher recorded a hat trick to lead the SJCS Varsity boys soccer team to a 9-0 win over host Palmetto in a Region 2-3A match Monday night.

Jonny Bunecke and Mateo Rojas each had two goals and an assist for the Knights, who bounced back from back-to-back defeats in a big way.

Jacob Stewart had a goal and an assist, Charlie Baker had a goal and Evan Farrell contributed an assist for the Knights (10-5, 5-4).

  • The JV Knights lost to the Mustangs, 1-0.

Girls Soccer

The Varsity girls scored twice in the second half and beat visiting Palmetto 2-0 on Monday night in a region match.

Lula Johnson broke the scoreless tie, and Elin Johnson added an insurance goal for the Knights (8-4, 5-2).

  • The JV girls breezed to a 7-0 win over Palmetto.

Girls Lacrosse

The Varsity girls lacrosse team lost on the road against Mauldin, 20-4.

Liza May Perry scored three goals, and Kristen Nelson had one goal for the Knights (6-7). Molly Monroe had an assist.

Julia Su had 11 saves in goal, and Mollie Mendelson had four saves.

Boys Tennis

The JV boys tennis lost on the road against J.L. Mann, 6-0.

Baseball

Host Southside Christian took the lead in the fifth inning and held on to beat the Varsity Knights 6-4 in their Region 2-3A showdown on Friday night.

The Knights (12-5, 6-2) played the first-place Sabres tough for the second time in four days but came up short once again.

The score was tied 3-3 through four innings. Southside Christian scored two in the fifth. The Knights pulled to within 5-4 in the sixth, but the Sabres added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Quinn Walsh was solid on the mound for the Knights, giving up four runs -- only one earned -- through 4 2/3 innings. He allowed only four hits, struck out six and walked three.

John Eberstein had two hits, including a solo homer in the second inning. Jackson Campbell had a two-run homer in the fourth. Christian Timko had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

John Campbell had two hits and scored two runs. Sam Utecht had a double. The Knights outhit the Sabres 9-7.

  • The Middle School Knights built a seven-run lead and held on to defeat host Southside Christian 8-6 in five innings on Saturday.

Ivan Turrell had two hits and knocked in a run, and Teigan Styles and Drew Royal each had a hit and drove in a run.

Winning pitcher James Barker allowed one run on one hit over three innings. He struck out three and walked one. Royal pitched a scoreless fifth to earn the save.

  • The JV Knights lost at Southside Christian on Saturday, 17-3 in five innings. Miles Lynn had two hits, including a two-run single.
