Host Christ Church won 5-1 in the Knights' Region 2-3A opener on Thursday.

Lyla Cate Frye posted the Knights' lone victory, defeating Eliza Cunningham -- who had won when the two played in the Greenville County preseason tournament.

"Lyla Cate turned the tables and played some of her best tennis and defeated her opponent in straight sets," Knights Coach Tricia Brown said. "LC is a fighter and never gives up. I was very proud of effort."

Ann Moorman lost at No. 3 singles in a match that last well over three hours.

"The score does not really indicate just how close it was," Coach Brown said. "It was a true demonstration of tenacity, as many points lasted 15 to 20 shots per point. Ann is a tremendous athlete, and she demonstrates incredible perseverance and resiliency in long matches. She battles until the very end."

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Kayce Charlton and Nora Walker also played a close match but came up just short, losing in a third-set tie-breaker.

Next, the Knights will play at Travelers Rest on Tuesday and then host Southside Christian in a region match on Thursday.
