Roundup: Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis, Golf All Win

The SJCS Varsity girls soccer team did all of its scoring in the second half Wednesday night and defeated host Southside Christian 3-0 in a Region 2-3A match.

The Knights broke on top when Lola Kelly scored on a header, redirecting a corner kick from Taylor Hargett.

Then Caroline Mruz scored, with an assist from Elin Johnson, making it 2-0.

The Knights (6-3, 3-1) added an insurance goal and increased the lead to 3-0 when Kelly scored her second goal of the night by converting a penalty kick.

Varsity golf - George Covington

Hoping to bounce back from Wednesday's loss against Christ Church, the Knights came up with their best performance of the season in a 153-183 win over Cardinal Newman at the Wildewood Club in Columbia on Thursday.

A trio of players -- Hudson Wolfram, George Covington, and Bryce Chapman -- fired 1-over-par 37s, and Max McGregor contributed a 42 to the victory. Competing in their first away match and paired together, Burke Perry and Liam Davis both shot 46.

Wolfram recorded a pair of birdies, and Covington and Chapman each had one. Another highlight: Perry's hole-out from the bunker on No. 4.

Boys Tennis

The Varsity boys tennis team also rebounded from a loss to Christ Church with a strong performance in a 5-1 win over Southside Christian in a Region 2-3A match at Greenville Tennis Club on Thursday.

Knights Coach Ken Arp said the highlight was the victory at No. 5 singles by Alexander Millener, who lost the first set, came back to win the second and rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the tie-breaker.

"I'm just so proud of the grind he put in to win that match and boost his season moving forward," Coach Arp said.

Whit Wilkins (No. 1), Jeremiah Adams (No. 2) and Hampton Norwood (No. 3) also won singles matches, and Brodie Miller and Byron Webb won at No. 2 doubles.
