Middle School Boys, Girls Advance in Tournaments

The SJCS Middle School boys basketball team had a battle on its hands against visiting Bob Jones Academy on Tuesday.

And then it didn't.

The top-seeded Knights began a 20-0 run late in the first half to shake the eighth-seeded Lions and went on to a 50-27 win in the first round of the Carolina Middle School Conference tournament.

The Knights will host No. 5 Christ Church in the semifinals tonight at 7:15.

Bob Jones scored to pull within 14-11 with 2:30 left in the first half. The Lions did not score again until the 3:20 mark of the third quarter. At that point, the Knights led 34-13.

Carter Lindsay scored 10 of his 16 points in the third quarter, and the Knights outscored the Lions 20-2 in the period.

George Covington scored seven points, and Teigan Styles, Jack Copeland and Rylan Murray each had six points. John Martin Adams, Hampton Uzas and Billy Couchell had three points apiece.

Middle School Girls

The Middle School girls, seeded second, gradually pulled away and defeated No. 7 Langston 41-27 on Wednesday in the first round of the CMSC tournament.

The host Knights will play at home again in the semifinals, taking on No. 3 Southside Christian tonight at 6:00.

Katy Gernon hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points for the Knights, who led 24-14 at halftime and 34-19 after three quarters. Elizabeth McCall Suggs and Mary Bradford Brown added 10 and eight points, respectively.
