Girls Soccer Team Rolls; Baseball Team Falls Short

The SJCS girls soccer team defeated visiting Broome 7-0 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs on Tuesday night.

Play was stopped eight minutes into the second half when a Broome player suffered a knee injury. After a long delay, during which EMS was called and the player was taken from the field in an ambulance, the game was officially declared over at that point.

CLASS 3A GIRLS SOCCER BRACKET

Lola Kelly scored 20 seconds into the match for the Knights (10-4), seeded sixth in the Upper State. She had a hat trick within the first eight minutes, and St. Joe's had a 3-0 lead.

Taylor Hargett, Caroline Mruz and Ava Kuzmich each had a goal and an assist for the Knights, who led 6-0 by halftime. Payton Armstrong scored the seventh goal early in the second half.

With their win over No. 11 Broome, the Knights advance to play on the road against No. 3 Walhalla in the second round at 6:00 PM Friday. Walhalla beat No. 14 Powdersville 2-1 on penalty kicks in the first round.

Woodruff scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat the host Knights 6-2 in the first round of the 3A baseball playoffs Tuesday night.

Junior right-hander Lucas Thompson pitched well for the Knights. In the decisive seventh inning, he allowed one hit, walked one, hit a batter and had a wild pitch, but there were also three errors, leading to three unearned runs.

In all, Thompson went 6 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits; he struck out six and walked one.

Woodruff led 1-0 and 2-1. St. Joe's tied the score at 1-1 in the third when John Campbell doubled, moved to third on a single by Christian Timko and scored on a groundout by Quinn Walsh.

CLASS 3A BASEBALL BRACKET

After the Wolverines regained the lead, the Knights pulled even in the sixth. Eberstein singled, Frank Remsberg walked and Nolan Green reached on an error to load the bases. Paul Norman, the courtesy runner for Eberstein, scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Utecht.

Eberstein and Jackson Campbell each had two hits for the Knights.

The Knights (14-8), seeded sixth in the Upper State, dropped into the losers' bracket of the double-elimination event with their loss to No. 11 Woodruff. St. Joe's will play on the road against No. 3 Crescent in an elimination game at 6:30 PM Thursday.
