Girls Soccer Team Cruises into Upper State Final

The SJCS girls soccer team pulled away in the second half and beat Greer Middle College 7-1 in a Class 3A third-round playoff match at North Greenville University on Tuesday night.

The Knights (12-4), seeded sixth in the Upper State, and No. 12 Southside Christian (12-9), having eliminated the top two seeds, will play for the Upper State championship at noon Saturday at St. Joe's.

Southside Christian advanced by defeating top-seeded Christ Church 3-2 on penalty kicks. Christ Church was the Region 2 champion. St. Joe's was second, and Southside Christian was fourth.

The Knights' victory came against No. 2 GMC, the Region 3 champion. The teams played during the regular season, and St. Joe's won on penalty kicks. This one wasn't nearly as close.

Elin Johnson scored a goal and assisted on goals by Claire Walters and Lola Kelly in the first half, which ended with the Knights ahead 3-1.

In the second half, Caroline Mruz scored on a penalty kick and then again with an assist from Brynna Okuley. Taylor Hargett scored with an assist from Sydney Reyes, and Lula Johnson's goal capped a huge game for the Knights.

The Knights have scored seven goals in each of their three playoff games, and six different players have scored in each of the last two.

St. Joe's won both of its region matches against Southside Christian, by scores of 2-1 at home and 3-0 on the road.

Boys Golf

The boys golf team carded a 666 to finish eighth in the Class 3A state tournament after two days of competition at Diamondback Golf Club in Loris.

In Monday's first round, George Covington led the Knights with a 79, followed by Clyde Williams (82), Liam Davis (83) and Cael Roberts (85) for a total of 329.

On Tuesday, Bryce Chapman shot 83, Williams 84 and Covington and Davis each came in at 85, giving the team a 337.
