Boys Tennis Wins Thriller; Track Earns Region Titles

The SJCS boys tennis team edged host Walhalla 4-3 in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs on Thursday.

With the victory over the third-seeded Razorbacks, the sixth-seeded Knights earned a home match in the third round. They will host No. 7 Southside Christian at 4:30 PM Monday. The Sabres beat No. 2 Chapman 6-0.

Against Walhalla, Hampton Norwood came up big for the Knights, winning his No. 3 singles match in a second-set tiebreaker to tie the match at 3-3 and then teaming with Whit Wilkins to win No. 1 doubles in a third-set tiebreaker 10-8.

"All the pressure was on Hampton, and he delivered at the best time," Knights Coach Ken Arp said. "I cannot say enough about his performance under pressure. It is why he means so much to this team and is our motivational leader."

Wilkins also won at No. 1 singles, and Brodie Miller and Byron Webb won at No. 2 doubles.

The Knights will play Region 2 rival Southside Christian for the third time this season, having split the first two meetings. St. Joe's won the first, 5-1, and lost the second, 4-3.

Track and Field

SJCS athletes placed first in three individual events and two relays at Thursday's Region 2-3A Championships at Southside Christian School.

Sam Patterson took first in both the 100- (11.16) and 200-meter (23.10) dashes. He also was on the Knights' winning 4x100 relay team (44.23) along with Mack Rambo, Eliot Power and Timothy Power.

Among the girls, Eva Cifuni won the 1,600 (5:22.23), and the 4x800 relay team of Bea Hamilton, Corinne Okuley, Odette Brown and Sutton Alexander took first (10:16.36.

Both the boys and the girls finished fourth out of six teams.

Boys Golf

The boys golf team competed in the Falcon Cup at Palisades Country Club in Charlotte on Wednesday, placing in the middle of the pack among 17 teams from across the Carolinas. The unusual format had two-person teams playing nine holes best ball (four-ball) and nine holes alternate shot (foursomes).

The Knights' play was consistent: Hudson Wolfram and Mo Laubash, 39-38 (77); Smith Crick and Bryce Chapman 39-38 (77); and Clyde Williams and Cael Roberts 41-39 (80).

The Knights competed in the Region 2-3A championships Friday at Saluda Valley Country Club in Williamston, and the Upper State championship is set for Monday at Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff, with the Knights' first tee time scheduled for 8:50 AM.

The Varsity BOYS SOCCER team completed its regular season Thursday with a 6-1 loss at Dorman.

The Knights, 10-7 overall and the No. 7 seed in the Upper State, will open the Class 3A playoffs by hosting No. 10 Crescent at 6:30 PM Monday.

  • The Varsity GIRLS SOCCER team (9-4), seeded sixth in the Upper State will host No. 11 Broome in the first round of the playoffs at 6:00 PM Tuesday.

CLASS 3A GIRLS SOCCER BRACKET

  • The Varsity BASEBALL team (14-6) will conclude its regular season on the road tonight at 7:30 against Mountain View Prep (JV at 5:00 PM).

The Knights, seeded sixth in the Upper State, will open the first round of the 3A playoffs (a series of four-team, double-elimination tournaments) at home against No. 11 Woodruff at 7:45 PM Tuesday.

CLASS 3A BASEBALL BRACKET

  • The SOFTBALL team lost on the road against Brashier Middle College 26-25 on Wednesday. Stella Nash was 4 for 5 with a home run, double, four RBIs and five runs scored.

Sloan Greer was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and five runs scored, and Jackie Garrett was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

The Knights (6-12) will wrap up their regular season by hosting the Greenville Hurricanes at 5:00 PM today.

They have the No. 12 seed in the Upper State and will open the playoffs (also double-elimination) on the road against No. 5 Union County at 6:30 PM Wednesday.
