Baseball, Boys Soccer Fall Out of Class 3A Playoffs

The SJCS baseball team made a nice run through the losers' bracket after an opening defeat in the Class 3A playoffs, posting a pair of shutouts and winning the first of two games it had to win Monday night.

But the Knights' run -- and their season -- came to an end with a 4-2 loss at Woodruff in the double-elimination event.

In the first game, the Knights, seeded sixth in the Upper State, led No. 11 Woodruff 5-3 after five innings on the strength of a strong pitching performance by Lucas Thompson and a pair of solo homers by Christian Timko.

But the Wolverines scored two runs in the sixth, neither team scored in the seventh and the game went to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Quinn Walsh led off with a double. After Alex Gibeau was intentionally walked with two outs, Nolan Green singled to score Walsh with the go-ahead run.

Gibeau then replaced Thompson and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth to secure the win.

Thompson gave up only five hits through seven innings, and only one of the five runs he allowed was earned.

Like Timko, Green, Gibeau and Jackson Campbell each had two hits, and Gibeau and Green each had two RBIs.

In the second game, Woodruff scored four runs in the third inning. Gibeau started for the Knights and pitched three innings. Frank Remsberg relieved Gibeau and no-hit the Wolverines over the final four innings.

Timko had two hits, and Green and Jackson Campbell each drove in a run.

Boys Soccer

The SJCS boys soccer team came up short in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs, losing on the road against Christ Church on Monday night, 2-0.

The Knights (12-8), seeded seventh in the Upper State, lost to the sixth-seeded Cavaliers for the third time this season.

Six of the Knights' eight losses came against teams from Region 2, and it was an all-Region 2 final four in the Upper State for the second year in a row.

Boys Golf

The SJCS boys golf team shot 329 and stood ninth after the first day of the Class 3A state tournament Monday at Diamondback Golf Club in Loris.

Christ Church and Oceanside Academy were tied for first at 294.

The final round is today.

Girls Soccer

The SJCS girls soccer team (11-4), seeded sixth in the Upper State, will play No. 2 Greer Middle College (18-3) in a Class 3A third-round playoff match at 6:00 tonight at North Greenville University. The teams met early this season at St. Joe's, and the Knights won 5-4 on penalty kicks.
