Barbara McGrath Tells Story of 'The Miracle'

Barbara McGrath, one of Saint Joseph's Catholic School's Founders and an employee for three decades, recently spoke to the Sixth Grade Academy's Foundations classes about the history of the school.

Mrs. McGrath told the story of "the Miracle," how she and eight other lay Founders persevered until the Upstate had its first Catholic high school.

They kept being told no, kept hearing it would not be possible, kept being turned down and yet, classes began on August 26, 1993 for 13 students in a small house on Augusta Road that was leased to the school for one dollar by St. Michael’s Lutheran Church.

Mrs. McGrath was a dedicated employee at the school from its opening until her retirement in May 2023. The main hall in the new Founders Saint Joseph's Way Center is named in her honor.
