Varsity Boys Win in OT; Girls Roll Past Palmetto
Carter Bears tied the score with a late basket in regulation, and the SJCS Varsity boys went on to a 67-61 overtime victory against Palmetto in a Region 2-3A game Friday night.
Dion Jamerson scored 24 points and Bryson Smith added 15 points as the Knights helped to cap off Catholic Schools Week in front of a big crowd and a huge student section.
St. Joe's led 25-21 at halftime, led 34-25 after Keandre Jamerson's two free throws midway through the third quarter and still led 45-38 after Caleb Hood's 3-point play with 5:30 remaining.
But the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run to take the lead with 3:24 left and led 54-52 after a free throw with 16 seconds to go. They regained possession but turned the ball over, and Bears hit a short bank shot in the lane with 2.5 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Dion Jamerson put the Knights on top with a put-back. After Palmetto made it 56-56, Bears scored on a drive, Smith hit two free throws and Bears made 1 of 2 at the line to make it 61-56 with 1:30 left.
The Knights were able to hold on from there and improve to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the region.
Smith Crick scored eight points, Bears seven points and Keandre Jamerson six points for St. Joe's. Hood had three points, and Juan Montoya and Carl Harrison each had two points.
Varsity Girls
Eliza Carter scored 15 points -- nailing five 3-pointers -- and the Varsity girls cruised to a 70-31 win over Palmetto on Friday night.
Evie Adams and Stella Nash each scored 11 points for the Knights (9-7, 4-2), who led 19-6 after one quarter and 42-14 at halftime.
Lola Kelly had nine points, Tiffany Helmer eight points, Gianna Franchina seven points, Eva Cifuni five points and Emi Reese Hand and Alice Martin two points apiece.
Junior Varsity Boys
The JV boys defeated Belton-Honea Path and Seneca on Saturday in the first two rounds of the Liberty tournament.
The Knights will play Greenville High in the semifinals this coming Saturday.
Middle School Girls
St. Joe's, seeded fourth and playing at home, beat fifth-seeded Langston Charter 39-24 in the first round of the Carolina Middle School Conference tournament on Friday.
The Knights will play on the road against top-seeded Southside Christian in the semifinals at 6:30 PM Tuesday. The winner will advance to the championship game at St. Mary's at 4:00 PM Thursday.
