Baseball, Boys Soccer, Softball Win in Playoffs

Josh Lyons capped a three-run rally with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the SJCS baseball team to a 7-6 win over visiting Broome in the Class 3A District 2 tournament Thursday.

The victory moved the fourth-seeded Knights into Monday's district championship, which they will host at 4:30 PM. They will play the winner of Saturday's game between No. 12 Broome and No. 5 Belton-Honea Path, and that team will have to beat St. Joe's twice. The Knights will need just one win to advance to the Upper State tournament.

CLASS 3A BASEBALL BRACKET

The Knights vaulted into the driver's seat by erasing a 6-4 deficit in their final at-bat against Broome. Jackson Campbell led off the seventh with a single, and Quinn Walsh walked. Both runners advanced on John Eberstein's sacrifice, and Frank Remsberg walked to load the bases.

All three runners moved up on a balk, with Campbell scoring to make it 6-5. Then Nolan Green walked to load the bases again and bring Lyons to the plate.

Lyons lined a pitch down the right-field line, scoring Walsh and John Campbell (courtesy runner for Remsberg), setting off a wild celebration and giving the Knights the weekend off.

Lucas Thompson earned the victory, shutting out the Centurions on two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.

The Knights defeated visiting Southside Christian 1-0 in a Class 3A second-round playoff match Thursday night.

Andrew Moore-King scored with an assist from Rhys Roberts in the 18th minute, and the Knights made it stand to beat Region 2 rival Southside Christian for the third time this season.

St. Joe's, seeded ninth in the Upper State, advances to play on the road against No. 4 Christ Church at 6:30 PM Monday in the third round.

CLASS 3A BOYS SOCCER BRACKET

It will be the fourth meeting between the arch rivals this season. The teams split their region meetings, with each winning at home (St. Joe's by 1-0 and Christ Church by 3-1). Then, in a tiebreaker at Powdersville to determine seeding, the Cavaliers won 2-0.

No. 10 Palmetto plays No. 3 Powdersville in the other Upper State third-round match, which means all four teams in the Upper State semifinals are from Region 2.
