The course is designed to be useful to students having widely differing backgrounds and career plans. Laboratory work is an essential part of this course. Topics covered include scientific measurement; chemical periodicity; atomic structure; chemical names and formulas; bonding; behavior of gases; chemical reactions; stoichiometry; properties of solutions; acids and bases; oxidation-reduction reactions; and thermochemistry. The development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills is stressed throughout the course.
