The SJCS Varsity boys basketball team shook off an early deficit and hung on late for a 52-49 victory in a play-in game Thursday night over host Crescent.
Senior Ben Saunders scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:36 remaining. Senior Gannon Stockton also scored 17 points for the Knights.
Junior Jalen Gibson scored 15 points, including two free throws with 28.2 seconds left that gave St. Joe’s a 52-49 lead.
Crescent had a chance to tie the score, but Saunders made a steal with two seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Knights.
Sophomore Josh Burns scored three points for the Knights, who fell behind 15-6 early in the second quarter. St. Joe’s went on a 15-1 run to take a 21-16 lead. The score was 21-21 at halftime and 36-36 after three quarters.
The Knights (10-5 overall), who finished third in Region 2, advance to play on the road against Region 1 champion Christ Church in a Class 2A first-round playoff game at 6:30 PM Monday. The game will be live streamed on CCES.tv.
