Walker Wood ran for three touchdowns and threw for two scores to lead the SJCS Junior Varsity football team to a 40-16 victory over visiting Landrum on Thursday night.

The Knights (3-1) avenged a season-opening, 8-2 loss at Landrum and won their third game in a row since that defeat.
On Landrum’s second possession, the Knights’ Wood and Hayden Courchaine made a tackle for loss, followed by another stop behind the line by Trey Sanders. On third down, Collins Langdon intercepted, giving St. Joe’s the ball at the Cardinals’ 32-yard line.
On first down, Thomas Armaly ran for 30 yards. Wood went the final 2 yards for a touchdown. Lily VanPelt added the point-after kick, and the Knights had a 7-0 lead.
Langdon and Brendan Alvis made a tackle for loss, and Gabe Nelson knocked down a pass on third down, forcing a punt.
It took St. Joe’s two plays two score, with Wood hitting Harrison Zinkann in stride for a 49-yard touchdown pass. VanPelt’s kick made it 14-0.
Sanders returned the third-quarter kickoff to the Knights’ 45, and Armaly ran for 30 yards, taking the ball to the Cardinals’ 25. Five plays later, Armaly scored from 2 yards out. VanPelt added the conversion, and St. Joe’s was ahead 21-0.
The Knights’ next possession began at the Landrum 46, and Armaly ran for 30 yards on first down. On the next play, Wood hooked up with Zinkann again, this time for a 16-yard touchdown. The kick was no good, but the Knights had a 27-0 advantage.
After Landrum scored and added a two-point conversion to make it 27-8, St. Joe’s answered with a 70-yard drive.
Armaly ran for 25 yards and Tradd Coulter for 11. After a penalty moved the ball to the Cardinals’ 19-yard line, Wood ran for 11 yards and then 8 for the touchdown. The kick was partially blocked, and St. Joe’s had a 33-8 lead.
Landrum returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and again added the two-point conversion to make it 33-16.
The Knights’ next possession ended with Wood’s third rushing touchdown, this one a 29-yard dash. VanPelt’s kick gave St. Joe’s a 40-16 lead.
Landrum ran the kickoff back to the Knights’ 27. The Cardinals were threatening again but fumbled and Armaly recovered, and St. Joe’s ran out the clock.
Next Thursday, the Knights will play on the road against Carolina High at 6:00 PM.
Tonight, the SJCS Varsity football team (3-1, 2-1 in Region 2-2A) will be seeking its third consecutive victory when it travels to Landrum for a Region 2 game against the Cardinals (1-2, 1-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

The SJCS volleyball team defeated Landrum 3-1 (25-14, 25-9, 21-25, 25-17) on Thursday night in a tie-breaker for second place in Region 2.
With the victory, the Knights clinched a playoff berth and will play on the road against Region 3 champion Gray Collegiate in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs Tuesday night.
The SJCS girls tennis team lost on the road against four-time defending state champion Christ Church, 6-0, in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs Tuesday.
