The SJCS Varsity girls tennis team capped its regular season with a loss Thursday, but it was a dramatic 4-3 defeat against visiting Riverside.
“It was a great night for tennis,” said St. Joe’s Coach Tricia Brown. “Everyone played with tremendous heart and soul. My seniors really led the way for the team.”
The score was tied at 3-3 and was dependent upon the result of the No. 1 doubles match. SJCS seniors Julia Jacques and Caroline Gallagher forced a third-set tie-breaker before losing 10-5, sealing the victory for the Warriors.
“Julia and Caroline had not played together all season but really came together and played some quality tennis, showing that you can never underestimate any of our players,” Coach Brown said.
The other highlight of the evening was the epic, three-and-a-half-hour duel at No. 2 singles, in which SJCS senior Adrianna Delacruz outlasted Riverside’s Jaime Park, 7-6, 3-6, 10-5.
“Adrianna was a bastion of tenacity and demonstrated nerves of steel, as most points lasted a minimum of 20-plus strokes,” Coach Brown said. “It was something to behold. It was the kind of match that tested your physical conditioning, but more so your mental conditioning. Adrianna proved yet again her ability to play great tennis at a very high level. It was an impressive match to watch as each point was lasting forever, and no one was showing signs of quitting.”
The Knights now move on to the Class 2A playoffs. As Region 2 champion, St. Joe’s will host Region 3 runner-up Newberry in the first round on Tuesday at 5:00 PM.
