The SJCS Varsity and JV cross country teams made a strong showing in meets at Hillcrest and J.L. Mann high schools over the weekend.
On Friday, in the GTC Tiger Classic hosted by Southside High School at Hillcrest, the St. Joe’s girls finished third in their flight and fourth overall out of 21 teams, and the boys finished third in their flight and ninth overall out of 23 teams from all over the Upstate at all levels.
The top five scorers for the boys were: senior Tristan McTigue (9th, 17:33), senior Dylan McTigue (10th, 17:39), sophomore Ryan Kane (17th, 18:25), senior Mark Hartig (28th, 19:42), and junior Nathan Hopkins (31st, 19:56).
Senior Caroline Linen led the girls by finishing 14th in 20:26, and she was followed by senior Brigid Alvis (17th, 20:36), 8th-grader Lauren Kelly (29th, 21:41), freshman Nina Brown (35th, 22:14) and senior Skylar Lewis (36th, 22:15).
On Saturday, the JV teams competed with two other teams in the J.L. Mann meet at its “across 85” athletic facilities and came in a strong second between 5A Mann (first) and 3A Southside (third).
For the SJCS boys, the top five were: freshman Alan Burgess (21:01), senior Adam Miller (21:39), senior Johnny Covington (21:43), freshman Evan Conroy (22:20.03), and freshman Christopher Suarez (22:20.59).
The top five for the girls were: freshman Caroline Powers (26:46), freshman Fiona Novak (26:47), junior Isabella Adams (26:58), freshman Isabella Banan (28:14) and sophomore Hannah Adams (30:25).

The SJCS Varsity teams will compete in the Mike Moore Lake Murray Invitational this Saturday (girls at 8:00 AM, boys at 8:45).
Spectators will not be allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions, but video coverage of the races will be available at SCRunners.com.
