St. Joe’s Girls Capture Second Consecutive SCISA Soccer Title - Posted @ 9:38 am EST on 5/16/05

Nicole CoiaThe St. Joseph's Lady Knights Varsity Girls Soccer successfully defended their State Title for the second year defeating Cardinal Newman School in Columbia on Saturday, May 14 by a score of 5-1. The Lady Knights went undefeated in conference play again this season, suffering only three losses total to Fort Mill and Dorman, both AAAA schools, and Stratford Academy, the Georgia Independent School State Champion.

The Lady Knights run for the soccer state title began on Tuesday, May 10 when the girls defeated Pinewood Prep on their home field 5-0 with goals from seniors Ali Bunchman, Nicole Coia, and freshman Austin Fagan. On Thursday, May 12, the Knights returned to face off against Hilton Head Christian Academy, the team they defeated last year for the state title. The Knights began the game with two goals by Coia. At the close of the first half, the Eagles answered with a goal. The Eagles began the second half scoring again on a breakaway. Sophomore Julia Gragtmans quickly answered with another goal for St. Joseph's, and the majority of the second half was scoreless, leading the Knights to believe they would be victorious. Then, with less than 15 seconds left in the game, the Eagles managed to score off of a free kick, tying the game and sending it into overtime. Coia then sealed the win two minutes into overtime on a break away, and the Knights were off to another State Championship.

The championship game was surrounded with excitement. The Knights met their longtime Catholic rival, Cardinal Newman, for the third time this season at Heathwood Hall in Columbia for the title match on Saturday, May 14. With a bus full of fans, and St. Joe's boys painted in blue, the Knights took to the field with confidence. Only seven minutes into the game, Coia scored off Fagan's assist to give the Knights the lead. Minutes later, junior Casey Carmichael scored again off Fagan’s assist. By the end of the half, the Cardinals had managed one goal, answered by Coia's second goal of the game. Coia completed her hat trick early in the second half, assisted by Bunchman, and Gragtmans clenched the title with her goal earned off Coia's pass. The Knights are now Two-Time Running State Champions in their second year of coaching by SJCS faculty member and former soccer standout Ms. Shannon McCall.
