This year marked a move to the South Carolina High School League 1A competition for St. Joseph's Varsity Girls Soccer and the team is holding its own. Following a pre-season tournament at Easley High School, at which the Lady Knights defeated 4A Greenwood High School and 4A Nation Ford High School, St. Joseph's finished in fourth place with second day losses to Hillcrest High School and Bishop England.
"This tournament was a great eye-opener for us," stated Coach Shannon Herman. "We saw some excellent, unanticipated strengths within our team while having the opportunity to expose and address our weaknesses early. In particular, I am highly encouraged with our team’s offensive abilities."
The team opened their season on March 7 with a tough 4-0 loss to Eastside High on St. Joseph's home turf. After going the entire first half with a 1-0 score, the Lady Eagles found a hole in the Knights’ defense and slipped three goals into the Knights’ net within the first fifteen minutes of the second half. The Knights quickly recovered and plugged the defensive hole, but were unable to answer with any goals.
Senior Co-Captain Mary Stanton saw the loss as a wake-up call for the team. "This was our first game on our home field, and we fell apart. Sometimes we learn more from a loss than a win, but we are going to be sure this is a lesson we only learn once."
The Lady Knights quickly rallied from that loss and have continued their season with four wins, all on their home turf. On March 8, they defeated Greer Charter High School 7-0. Two days later, St. Joe's crushed 3A Walhalla 4-0. The following week, the team beat Landrum in their first conference game 7-0. On March 21, the Knights secured their second conference win against Southside Christian 8-3.
"The Southside Christian game was tougher than it appears," added Coach Herman. "The Sabres took an immediate lead on us with a corner kick in the first minute. I was really proud of my girls for remaining composed and answering within 30 seconds, but we volleyed goals for the first ten minutes. We simply can’t afford to make the defensive mistakes that we did that first half."
The Lady Knights faced off with 3A neighbor J.L. Mann on March 23. After a hard fought, scoreless first half, the Patriots found the Knight’s net at the beginning of the second half. St. Joe's fought hard to answer, but were unable to penetrate the Patriots’ defense. The loss to Mann gives the Lady Knights a 4-2 season record and a 2-0 conference record.
The Lady Knights Varsity Squad includes seniors Taylor Boyle, Katie Lynam (Co-Captain), Ashley McCarthy, Caitlin Rowe, and Mary Stanton (Co-Captain); juniors Claire Capelle, Katie Helvey, Dani Inglesby, and Sara Ruble; sophomores Shannon Beck, Aly Cajka, Meredith Schosky, and Nicole Stein; and freshmen Aimee Coggins, Melissa Mohr, and Melissa Zankman.
JV Girls Soccer
St. Joseph's has added a JV Girls squad to its soccer sports lineup this year. This team is an extension of the varsity soccer program and is coached by the same staff, with Shannon Herman at the head, assisted by Elizabeth Offerle and Sheldon Robinson.
"We think it is vital that the JV program flow naturally into the varsity program," said Coach Herman. "For this reason, we conduct the majority of our practices together and all three of us try to attend both teams' games. We strive to have one continuous soccer philosophy that translates into a solid, winning soccer tradition at St. Joseph's."
The JV squad is already experiencing significant success. March 17 marked their first game of the season at home against Landrum, which they won by a 7-0 landslide. The next night, the squad competed in a grueling battle with Christ Church Episcopal School for a 2-1 loss. But, the Lady Knights quickly regained their momentum with a 7-0 win at Southside Christian on March 22 and a 2-0 victory at home against Langston Charter Middle School on March 23.
"I have been extremely proud of our JV team so far this season," stated Coach Offerle. "Part of building a solid soccer tradition at St. Joseph's starts with having a strong JV program. We have had some big wins over strong opponents and the girls are dedicated to making our first JV season a successful one."
The JV squad is composed of tenth graders Kaitlyn Posa and Nikki Williams (Co-Captains), ninth graders Anissa Armaly, Jennifer Coggins, Sarah Gibson, Neva Jacobsen, Taylor Jones, Caroline Kelly, Grace Mosley, Kelly Olin, and Emily Wood, eighth graders Mary Ellen Grosskopf, Carley Reinholtz, Charlotte Ruble, and Deanna Zimeri, and seventh graders Tia Caron, Kristen Kauffman, and Bailey Mullins.
