| SJCS Students Presented With Girl Scout Honors - Posted: 2008-05-15 |
Several St. Joseph's students were recently presented with some of Girl Scouts highest honors at a Girl Scout Awards Ceremony held May 9, 2008: Senior Sarah Moore was presented the Pauline Patterson Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2000 to honor the memory of Pauline M. Patterson, a member of the local Girl Scout Staff from 1988 to 2000. Pauline designed programming that was fun and adventurous, that reached beyond troop activities, and provided girls with the incentive to look beyond themselves. As a tribute to Pauline’s enthusiasm for life and learning, this $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a senior Girl Scout who best exemplifies these ideals. Junior Emily Schrank was presented with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. In completing the required badges and career requirements, Emily exhibited strong leadership qualities and provided outstanding service to others. Emily also completed a 65-hour service project that reached beyond the Girl Scout organization and provided lasting benefits to the community. For her project, titled "Helping Heads," Emily made fleece hats for developmentally delayed children, and also hosted a workshop to teach others the required sewing skills to make the hats. Eighth grade students Lindsey Foley, Monica Fric, Megan Heijjer, and Elizabeth Moore were presented the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that can be earned by a Cadette Girl Scout. Among other requirements to earn this recognition, each scout is required to design, plan, and carry out a forty-hour Silver Award project. For her Silver Award project, Lindsey implemented a one-week running camp at Prince of Peace Catholic School, in which Lindsey shared her love of running by teaching the girls about stretching, injury prevention, hydration, and other important aspects of running as a sport. For Monica’s project, titled "Pillows and Blankets with Love," she made fleece blankets and pillows for children who have extended stays in the hospital. Megan recorded books on tapes, specifically chosen to help teach Catholic virtues to young children, and spent time reading and discussing these stories with the second grade class at St Mary’s Catholic School. Elizabeth’s project was two-fold: she repaired and painted the three existing Girl Scout Bridges that scouts use for ceremonies, as well as built a new bridge in a project called "Bridges of Compassion," and she also collected over 400 stuffed animals to be distributed to children in traumatic situations in "Operation Bear Hug."

| Middle School Girls Soccer Crowned Conference Champs - Posted: 2008-05-12 |
The St. Joseph’s Middle School Girls Soccer Team claimed its second Carolina Middle School Championship Title on Friday night, May 9th, with a victory over a very fast and talented Mitchell Road Christian Academy (MRCA) Team. The Lady Knights (16-0) played tough all season, with two noted victories over the Upstate Public Middle School Champions, Mauldin Middle School. In the final championship game, seventh grader Elizabeth Ann Satterfield scored the opening goal early in the first half from a drop pass by eighth grader Keitt Panuccio. MRCA then proceeded to tie the score with a well-placed penalty kick just before halftime. Midway thru the second half, MRCA scored a second time to bring the score to 1-2. With less than a minute to go in the match, eighth graders Madeleine McMillan and Keitt Panuccio received the ball at midfield. They beat the first defender, were tackled, and then managed to regain possession. The two were again challenged by MRCA defenders in what looked like a rugby scrum, but still managed to pop up with the ball to be tackled yet a third time inside the goal area. Panuccio then managed to deflect a pass to seventh grader Meredith Schosky, who connected in the corner of the net with the tying score, with seconds left on the clock. "This was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever coached or even witnessed," stated Coach Jervey Inglesby. "Actually, it was a little too exciting." With less than ten seconds left in the second five minutes of sudden death overtime, the Knights fouled just outside the box, to give MRCA a likely opportunity to score a winning goal off a short penalty kick. The shot went wide and the game went into penalty kicks. "With Carlin Friedholm in the goal, I felt that we had a great advantage, and our five shooters knew exactly where they were going to place the ball," added Coach Inglesby. Panuccio, Satterfield, and eighth grader Grace Hanna managed to score off three of the Knight’s first four penalty kicks, while Friedholm blocked all but one of MRCA’s kicks. "I was really nervous before the game, but when it came time to take my penalty kick, all I could think about was where I was going to place my shot," stated Hanna. With the final score of 5-3 in favor of the Lady Knights, the game proved to be the winning finish to the end a perfect season, with the Lady Knights defending their second CMSC conference championship title. "This was a dream come true," added Panuccio. Dani Inglesby, Cara Mohr, Keitt Panuccio, and Meredith Schosky were named to the All-Conference Team. "Our strength was our tough defense, led by Cara Mohr, Nicholle Stein, Katie Helvey, and Grace Hanna," added Coach Inglesby. "They allowed only six goals throughout the season, while the Lady Knight’s offense managed 61 goals. Defeating the best public and private schools in the Upstate, this St. Joe’s Middle School Girls Soccer Team has proven to be one of the best in the state."

| Lady Knights Look Towards State Soccer Title - Posted: 2008-05-05 |
The St. Joseph’s Varsity Girls Soccer Team is once again in contention for the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) AAA State Championship. The Lady Knights opened their season ranked second in the state behind Hilton Head Prep. "It’s been a real learning experience for us this year," said Coach Shannon Herman. "Literally half of our team is new to the squad, but we have done exceptionally well, and with continued concentration and hard work, I truly believe the team is capable of going all the way." Herman attributes much of the team’s success to her senior leadership. "I have five seniors who will do anything for this team." Gabby Lutz, Liz Sanders, and Brooke Devon have been members of the team for four years and have experienced the thrill of winning a state championship. "They strive each and every day to share the energy of that level of success with their team," added Herman. Jessica Benore and Haley Kernell joined the team as sophomores. "You should see the work ethic these girls bring to practice and the comfort level of the team off the field. This team has bonded, and I expect them to do well because of this," added Herman. The entire season has been a battle for the Lady Knights. They began with wins against six conference teams, but the wins were close, with one being a shoot out victory. During the second half of the season, St. Joseph’s suffered losses to three Columbia schools: Ben Lippen, Hammond, and Catholic school archrival Cardinal Newman in a shoot-out last week. With a win last Friday over Augusta Christian in the final home game of the season, the Knights ended regular season play with a 7-3-0 record. The Knights then faced Ben Lippen on Saturday night to break the tie for first place in the Region and came away with a 2-1 victory. "We are ready and able," stated senior Liz Sanders. "I think the team has really come together and at such a perfect time with play offs this week. We are excited and motivated to achieve our goal of another state championship."

| Boys Soccer Heads Towards Playoffs - Posted: 2008-04-30 |
The transition to spring soccer for the SJCS Varsity Boys Soccer Team has been an eye opener. The Knights, who are currently 7-3, have faced all of their conference opponents and are tied for the second position in the conference as they head into their last week of the regular season with three games scheduled this week. The Knights have suffered multiple injuries, and at one point, had five of their starters out due to injuries, illness, and the school’s spring musical. Yet amidst the adversity, the team has managed to play well. "We are a very talented team, but have not been playing to our fullest potential," stated Coach Frank Kucinic. "We need to get everybody healthy and out on the practice field and iron out the kinks." The three losses hit hard and all within the past week when the Knights faced Hammond School from Columbia, Christ Church Episcopal School, and Cardinal Newman Catholic School, also from Columbia. "Hammond is ranked second in the state, and they are a very talented team," said Coach Kucinic. "Even though we lost the game, I truly feel it was one of the best games we played all season. Danny Conley, our goalkeeper, played the game of his life, having made eighteen unbelievable saves." St. Joseph’s had many opportunities to score, but couldn’t seem to capitalize on their chances, as the score went back and forth, but in the end, resulted in a loss for the Knights. Injuries and illnesses left the Knights without five players, including four starters, against Christ Church. "We had a lot of players that were playing in positions that they may not have been accustomed to," said Kucinic. The Knights took an early lead in the game with a goal from Alex Burnikel, but lost steam as the game went on without many of their key players. The Cardinal Newman game followed the next day. This was the first game where all the team players were present in over a week and the team quickly got back to the business of doing what they do best…playing a very high energy level. The Knights played hard and fought well, but Cardinal Newman was able to score with only four minutes remaining in the game. "That was heartbreaking, especially knowing that we had been presented with more scoring opportunities than Cardinal Newman," concluded Kucinic. During the end of their regular season play this week, the Knights will likely be competing for the number two seed in the playoffs.

| Golf Team Faces “Must-Win” Situation - Posted: 2008-04-22 |
The St. Joseph’s Varsity Boys Golf Team finds itself in a familiar situation as they prepare for the last regional match of the season. Like last year, St. Joseph’s is battling against Augusta Christian School for the fourth place invitation to the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) State Championships. With a record of 3 – 3 in regional matches, the Knights are tied with Augusta Christian. The regional match that will determine St. Joseph’s fate is set for Wednesday, April 23rd at the Gordon Lakes Golf Course at Fort Gordon. “Our team has been steadily improving and, based upon their 161 team score in the most recent match, the boys should fare well on Wednesday,” stated Coach Sheldon Early. With seniors Keith Early and Andrew Fryml leading the team as co-captains, St. Joseph’s currently posts a record of 7 – 8 overall and 3 – 3 in the region. Having members of the team securing medalist honors in six matches, the boys know they can go low when the situation demands it. When questioned about the team’s ability to pull off a victory in its bid for an invitation to this year’s playoffs, team co-captain Keith Early reflected on “the long ride home last year after missing the opportunity to go to state because of a loss to Augusta Christian. He further added, “We are motivated to not let that happen again this year.” Early’s performance this year has been just what the team needed as he posted scores of 41, 34, 37, 39, and 36 in matches where he garnered medalist honors. Over the course of the season, several players, most notably sophomore Austin Cajka, have stepped up their game. Cajka, who recently shared medalist honors by posting a score of 39 in a match against Greenville Tech Charter, credits his performance this year to “new irons, maturity, and hard work.” Moving into the number two position early in the season, Coach Early stated “Cajka has been a significant contributor to the squad and is expected to bring his ‘A’ game to the remaining matches.” Coach Early believes that junior Eric Witzke, sophomore Michael Baliker, and freshman Pete Bynarowicz have not yet tapped into their total potential. Witzke, who plays in the number three position, most recently garnered third place medalist honors by posting a 41 against Greenville Tech Charter. “Things are coming together for me at the right time,” added Witzke. With a week to tighten up his game, Witzke feels like he ‘can go low’ at the upcoming regional match. Sophomore Michael Baliker, playing in the number four position, has shown a solid commitment to improving his game. “Michael takes his game very seriously and his improvement over the course of the season can be attributed to his dedicated focus in practice and his constant performance review in matches,” added Coach Early. Bynarowicz, the lone freshman on the squad, is showing a marked improvement as well over the course of the season. “The experience being gained by Pete this season will pay big dividends in future years,” added Coach Early. Rounding out this years team is Andrew Fryml. As a graduating senior, Fryml stated, “I am on the verge of shooting a perfect round…I just have to get everything working at the same time. Hopefully that perfect game will show up in Augusta next week.”

| Seventh Graders Earn State Recognition in Duke TIP - Posted: 2008-04-18 |
Congratulations to eight SJCS seventh grade students, who qualified for State Recognition after completing the college entrance SAT or ACT test as a result of the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). Alyson Brown, Noah Davis, Jensen Grim, Phillip Key, Timothy Litzinger, Justin Mehl, Kaitlyn Posa, and Joey Wooten all scored above the national average on at least one part of the SAT or ACT. The Duke TIP helps identify academically talented seventh grade students based on standardized test scores. At St. Joseph's, the Iowa Tests that middle school students take in October serve as the qualifying tests for this program. For the 2006-2007 academic year, fifty-four St. Joseph's sixth grade students, representing 68% of their class, qualified for participation in the Duke TIP program. From that group, thirty-three students completed the SAT or ACT test.

The JV team's record to date is 6-0. Coach Sean Chapman added, "I have been really impressed with this group of guys because all of their matches have not been easy. | St. Joe’s Varsity Tennis On A Roll - Posted: 2008-04-15 |
After a faltering start at home against Heathwood Hall and Hammond Academy, the St. Joseph’s Varsity Boys Tennis Team is officially on a roll. On March 14th, the Knights hit the road running in their season’s first away league match at Ben Lippen in Columbia, winning 7-3. All-State SJCS junior Jackson DeMere continued his undefeated string in singles, beating Ben Lippen’s number one player 6-0, 6-0. DeMere then teamed with freshman Garrett Clark to win the number one doubles match. Freshman Alan Thomas combined touch, power, and brilliant tactics to win both his singles and doubles matches. All nine varsity players competed in the match. In the return match at home against Ben Lippen on April 1st, the Knights showed promising and needed improvement in consistency by winning all six singles matches and all three doubles matches. Senior co-captain Jeff Champ demonstrated heart in coming back from a 3-6 first set loss, winning the second set 6-0 and taking the third set tiebreaker 10-3. Freshman Tristan Sexton won a crowd-thriller with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over his opponent. The Knights won all three doubles matches with solid play by DeMere and Thomas (6-0, 6-1), freshman Patrick Key and Sexton (8-0), and eighth graders Ian Miller and Luca Gioia (7-7, 7-2). On April 9th, the Knights traveled to Columbia to defeat a rebuilding Cardinal Newman team 9-0. DeMere easily won his singles match 6-2 6-0. Key, a comeback specialist, defeated his opponent 7-6, 6-4. Sexton won a squeaker with a score of 6-2, 7-5. All three SJCS doubles teams won with 8-2 margins, with both DeMere and Champ missing some of the action due to play rehearsals for the school’s spring musical. The Knights are back on the road this week to play Heathwood Hall, seeking revenge for an upset, in order to keep their hopes alive for the regional championship title. We’re halfway through the regular season and we’re beginning to come together as a team,” concluded Coach Bill Robertson. “Everybody benefits when each team member gains experience and improves. I have reminded the boys that it doesn’t matter what number you play, or whether you play singles or doubles. We need to play as a unified team by supporting and helping each other. If we do this, we'll all get points and we'll all win, in the truest sense of the word.”

| Lady Knights Softball Answers The Call - Posted: 2008-04-08 |
At the start of the spring season, there were a lot of unanswered questions regarding the starting lineup for the 2008 St. Joseph’s Lady Knights Softball Team. With a roster depleted by ten students over the past two years, mostly due to graduation, the team was left with only three returning starters. Fourteen players answered the call for the 2008 season, and of these fourteen, seven are returning players. The remaining seven are freshmen and completely new to high school softball. “I think every year has been, and should be, a growing year,” stated senior captain Leanne Bernardez. “So this year is no different. Our team is growing and learning, just as a team should, and I’m glad to be a part of the leadership effort this season.” In addition to Bernardez, the starting lineup is anchored by returning starters and captains senior Christine Laskowski and sophomore Carly Hudson. A three-year starter at first base, Laskowski is the only returning starter to return to her same position in 2008. Bernardez moves from shortstop to pitcher and Hudson moves from third base to catcher. Other returning players that are starters in 2008 include junior Sarah Heard (third base/pitcher), sophomore Laura Twomey (right field), and freshmen Kaitlyn Dunphy (second base), and Caitlin Rusnak (shortstop/pitcher). Rounding out the starting lineup are freshmen Elizabeth Reynolds (centerfield) and Jeanne Morrison (left field). Freshmen reserves Gabrielle Genal, Meredith Moore, Danielle Sampson, Stephanie Saunders, and Hannah Wickert complete the lineup and have already contributed quality playing time. The Lady Knights are coached by veteran coach John Peoples and assisted by SJCS alumnus Kristen Eppinger, SJCS faculty member Bill Hudson, and SJCS alumni parent Nick Nichols. Although the 2008 spring lineup is marked by youth, it is also marked by incredible athletic potential. “We have a young team, but there is so much talent and potential here,” stated Laskowski. “I think that this is going to give us the opportunity to go far this season.” Carly Hudson added, “As the season started, we needed players to come out and work hard. This year was different from other seasons in that our defense has had to be stronger than ever. I’ve seen the younger players working hard and stepping up everyday, showing great improvement and potential.” After filling the roster, the biggest question at the start of the season was the question of pitching. Due to a multitude of reasons, including graduation and off-season injuries, the team entered the season without a starting pitcher. Three candidates, without any prior pitching experience, competed for the number one spot in the pre-season. Plagued with the inability to consistently throw pitches in the zone, the pitching staff, and consequently the Lady Knights, limped through several pre-season outings. Since then, however, senior Leanne Bernardez has emerged as the number one pitcher and has a record of 4 and 1. Although not a dominant strikeout pitcher, Bernardez has provided consistency and delivered several strong performances that have given the defense an opportunity to make some plays. “The pitching has improved to the point where we at least have a chance to make a play,” said Coach Peoples. “In softball, pitching is everything. But with this team, it’s about having to make every defensive stop. I am proud of the effort they have shown so far this season, and if we continue to work hard at practice, good things will continue to happen.” With a record of 4 wins and 2 losses, some of the questions regarding the potential of the team and its ability to compete for the conference championship have begun to be answered. The Lady Knights have delivered solid defensive and offensive performances to date, but have also shown the inconsistency of a young team. Entering the toughest part of the conference schedule, the success of the team will be measured by its ability to play with consistency. “We have demonstrated the ability to make great plays in practice and in games and to overcome adversity,” concluded Assistant Coach Bill Hudson. “As long as the girls play with confidence and do what they are capable of, then the only question is how far they want to take this season.” Click here to view photos of the 04-01-08 game against Ben Lippen School.

| Golf Team Positioned For Success - Posted: 2008-03-25 |
With four of last year’s team members returning, the St. Joseph’s Golf Team is well positioned for a successful 2008 season. Returning seniors Keith Early and Andrew Fryml will lead the team as captains, with Eric Witzke returning as the junior co-captain. “We had a marginally successful season last year, playing unfamiliar courses in a new division,” stated senior Keith Early. “But that experience will only serve to help us this year.” Looking back at last year, the St. Joseph’s team missed a trip to the state championship round by two strokes. With its first Regional Match scheduled for April 12th, the team knows that they will have to come out of the gate with a winning attitude. “When you consider the fact that several of these boys have been playing together for the past three years, it makes it easy to have realistic expectations for their performance as a coach,” stated returning Head Coach Sheldon Early. Coach Early expects this year’s team to go “all the way to the championships.” In addition to Early, Fryml, and Witzke, the Knights golf team roster includes sophomores Austin Cajka and Michael Baliker, and freshman Pete Bynarowicz. Having lost a key player from last year’s squad, Witzke and Cajka have both committed to stepping up their game, coupled with the addition of the hardworking and competitive nature of Michael Baliker and the eagerness of newcomer Pete Bynarowicz. With three outings behind them now, the team is sporting a 3 - 4 overall record. With a conference record of 2 - 4, Coach Early believes the team is better positioned in their quest for a State Conference invitation than they were last year. “If we are able to improve at the pace we did last year, I am confident that we will have a great season.” As was predicted pre-season, senior Keith Early has embraced his role as the team’s leader. With three matches under his belt, Keith has managed to garner medallist honors in all three, posting scores of 34, 41, and 37. In the team’s first match at the Par 36 Creekside Course at Pebble Creek, Southside Christian defeated SJCS by four strokes. Southside Christian posted a team score of 173 while St. Joseph's posted a 177 score. Living up to expectations, sophomore Austin Cajka rounded out the match medallists by finishing fourth with a round of 43. The team’s second tournament was a regional match at the Country Club of Carolina at Crickentree. Having played at this course once previously, and with six teams participating, the Knights ended in a respectable fourth place finish, posting a team score of 184. Notably, Keith Early tied for third place honors with a score of 41. “A fourth place finish in the first regional match compared to a last place finish last year was the confidence boost we needed as we move forward with this year’s schedule,” stated Early. In the third outing of the season, St. Joseph's defeated Spartanburg Christian Academy by three strokes. The Knights posted a 179 with Keith Early, Eric Witzke, and young gun Michael Baliker posting scores of 37, 47, and 47, respectively, at Verdae Greens. St. Joseph’s will be playing in the Greenville County Schools Tournament at Links O’Tryon the week of March 24th and the second of three regional matches the following week. “When all is said and done,” concluded Coach Early, “the winning attitude of this team and the school’s commitment to its students, will ensure their success, both on and off the golf course.”

| SJCS Baseball Team Looks Ahead - Posted: 2008-03-18 |
The St. Joseph’s Varsity Baseball Team is showing improvement every day as this young team faces a tough and demanding schedule. Leading the team is Head Coach Ryan Hart, a former standout baseball player for the Knights, an SJCS alumnus and a recent graduate of Clemson University, and now a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Assisting Hart is Michael Fox, who played baseball at Furman University under Coach Ron Smith, and has over eight years experience coaching high school baseball. Fox is also the Head Coach of the SJCS middle school baseball team. Both coaches have set high expectations for the boys and see a bright future for the baseball program. “You have to take it one practice and one game at a time and continue to teach the boys,” stated Coach Fox. “They eventually will catch on.” The Knights team is young and inexperienced, but that has not stopped them from being aggressive as they battle their opponents. The squad is comprised of one senior, two juniors, four sophomores, six freshmen, and two eighth graders. “You can only imagine the possibilities with a team of young talent,” stated Coach Hart. The team is led by two team captains: senior Joseph Hartley, who pitches, plays third base, and catches, and junior William Joseph, who pitches and plays shortstop. “Both have already made huge contributions,” added Hart. Joseph had 15 strikeouts in the school’s victory over Spartanburg Christian, and both have been swinging the bat very well. Behind the plate is freshmen L.J. Kleger, who also brings a strong bat and a vast intelligence of the game. Eighth grader Aaron Lesiak has put in a strong performance starting at second base, while freshmen Danny Mallory has taken over the duties at third and as pitcher. Leading off for the Knights with his speed and quick bat has been sophomore Alex Davidson at first base. Along with Hartley, Joseph, and Mallory, sophomore Connor Bolton and Freshmen Alex Winebarger are helping with the pitching duties. Both Bolton and Winebarger also play in the outfield when they are not on the mound. “I walked into this coaching job with no pitcher and now I have five pitchers,” said Coach Hart. “I feel certain that this team will be competing in the state tournament over the next few years.” Joining them in the outfield have been sophomore Aaron Miller and freshmen Doug Cates, who was 2-2 with two doubles against Ben Lippen on March 14th. Also on the team is eighth grader John Dutch, freshmen John Pereira and Daniel McCullough, sophomore Brandon Blaso, and junior Devin Daw, who has been dealing with an injury from the beginning of the season. “Each player brings his own unique talents and contributions to the team,” concluded Hart. In the past week, the Knights lost a heartbreaker to Shannon Forest 2-0. St. Joseph’s Bolton pitched a No-Hitter through 4½ innings, but the Crusaders were able to put two on the board in one inning to seal the victory. “We hit the ball well, but just could not seem to find an open spot on the field,” added Hart. “There were opportunities to score, but we couldn’t get the bat on the ball when it was necessary to do so.” The next day the Knights lost their first conference game to Heathwood Hall School in Columbia. “The first inning was a rough one as we gave up seven runs, but our guys played well once they settled down a little bit,” stated Coach Fox. William Joseph was back on the mound after his masterpiece performance against Spartanburg Christian, but had trouble finding the strike zone in the first inning before settling down. The Knights played again on Friday, March 14 against Ben Lippen School in Columbia. “Although we lost 12-3, it was a very close game through four innings, with Ben Lippen having a big fifth inning,” added Coach Hart. Coming up with big hits for the Knights were Doug Cates who was 2-2 with two doubles. William Joseph was 2-3, and Danny Mallory came up with a big double to left field. Alex Winebarger was on the mound for the Knights and had four strikeouts. The Knights were scheduled to finish a grueling week with a home game on Saturday, March 15 against Christ Church School, but the game was called after one inning due to weather. “We look ahead to this week with three games at home in an effort to turn our luck around,” concluded Coach Hart. |
| SJCS Hosts 15-Year Celebration - Posted: 2008-03-17 |
St. Joseph’s hosted a Fifteen-Year Celebration on Friday, March 14th. School Chaplain Fr Dwight Longenecker began the day by celebrating a Mass of Blessing for the new Blessed Sacrament Chapel and Altars, during which time plaques honoring donors, including Allie "Mack" Pazdan and others, were unveiled. In addition to the entire student body, many guests and benefactors were in attendance, as well as visitors from St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, the location of the school’s first campus. At the conclusion of the Mass, the school’s first door, donated earlier in the school year by St. Michael’s, was unveiled and blessed at its new location in the Main Chapel. This red door, to be opened only twice each year, will allow incoming freshmen and graduating seniors to process through it as a lasting tribute to the school’s beginnings. Guests later enjoyed a luncheon and presentation in the school library, as the celebration continued with a student Team Competition Day. The day concluded with an Alumni Reception and Reunion, and a Parent State-of-the School Meeting and Reception, held that evening on campus. Click here to view more photos from the day's celebration

St. Joseph’s solid defense allowed very few shots on goal and was not scored on in the tournament. SJCS eighth grader Cara Mohr, who scored the deciding penalty kick goal in the championship game against Mauldin Middle School, was a key player throughout the entire four games of the tournament. The midfield, led by seventh grader Aly Cajka, controlled the pace of the games with great passing. Cajka was named to the All-Tournament Team, and eighth grader Dani Inglesby was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament. | Boys Tennis To Build On Last Year's Success - Posted: 2008-03-04 |
The St. Joseph’s Boys Varsity Tennis Team returns for a challenging season, coming off last year’s 10-2 team record, the best in the school’s history. The Knights placed second in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) conference and was the only team to defeat conference champion Heathwood Hall School. Even though the team lost senior All-State Captain Thomas Powers to Furman University, along with three other starters due to graduation, out-of-state transfers, and the addition of boys soccer to the school’s spring sports roster, this year’s team is blessed with well-trained players who moved up from the school’s JV team to augment the three returning lettermen. Team co-captain Jackson DeMere confidently states, "Our team should be able to win at least three singles and two doubles matches against anyone in the state." In addition to DeMere, the 2008 team is led by co-captain Jeff Champ. Champ, the only senior on the squad, had an outstanding season last year, winning most of his matches. "Jeff is a superior doubles player and seems to improve with every practice," stated returning Head Coach Bill Robertson. "Not only that, but he’s a real team leader." DeMere, the team’s only junior, made the All-State Team last year. He played # 1 singles and # 1 doubles for the entire season, defeating every # 1 singles player on every team in the conference. With last year’s partner, J.D. Carino, DeMere also defeated every # 1 doubles team in the conference as well. "Jackson has shown great leadership in practice this season, helping the younger, less experienced players with singles and doubles instruction," added Coach Robertson. "He also volunteered to put together new courtside benches…but knowing Jackson, I doubt he will spend much time sitting on those benches." Sophomore Jeffrey McMillan, the team’s # 2 player, has improved more over the past year than any other player on the team. "He grew about five inches, gained about twenty pounds and has added a lot of pace to an already consistent game," stated Robertson. In addition to his commitment to Boys Varsity Tennis, he has also volunteered to help St. Joseph’s JV Coach Sean Chapman by serving as a student assistant with the JV team. Three ninth graders and an eighth grader are fiercely battling for the next four singles spots on the varsity team. Garrett Clark, Ian Miller, Tristan Sexton, and Alan Thomas are all shaping up to be excellent players. "I am convinced that each of them is capable of defeating any # 3 player in the state," said Coach Robertson. Other varsity team members include Luca Gioia, Patrick Key, Justin Peck, and Rick Schosky, and all of them have been working hard to master the doubles game and should see a lot of action in both doubles and singles play. "In tennis, every team member is important because each individual match directly affects the final score," added sophomore Jeffrey McMillan. "On our team, every player feels a part of the team, and goes into each match with the mindset that he has the potential to win every match he plays." Senior Jeff Champ added, "After practicing with the younger players, I feel that we have an excellent chance to match or surpass last year's successes and record." Coach Robertson concluded, "Hammond Academy and Heathwood Hall will be working hard to win the conference title, but so will St. Joseph’s. We must concentrate on being a team that strives to make each player achieve his best game. If we do this, we will have a successful season, and have fun achieving our goal, the conference championship. This is a young and enthusiastic team…it’s the kind of team a coach dreams about."
