Softball Team Makes Run For State Title - Posted: 2007-05-22
The St. Joseph’s Lady Knights Softball Team wrapped up their season with a 13-2 record in regular season play; the only losses suffered at the hands of two-time state runner-up Cardinal Newman School in Columbia. The team’s performance during the regular season confirmed that this was simply not a rebuilding season, and guaranteed a winning legacy for the five departing seniors. The Lady Knights qualified to compete in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) AAA State Softball Tournament the weekend of May 12 in Columbia. Armed with the confidence of a winning season and strong appreciation for team play, the Lady Knights were poised to make a run for the state championship. In the opening game, St. Joseph’s faced defending two-time state champion Florence Christian. In one of their finest performances of the year, the Lady Knights battled to a 1-1 tie before eventually losing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Following that loss, the Lady Knights won convincingly against Pinewood Prep and Thomas Heyward. The wins then set up a rematch with Florence Christian, the eventual third place finisher in the tournament. In another hard fought game, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie going into the sixth inning. Florence Christian rallied in the sixth to score five runs, making the difference in the game. The loss ended the tournament run and a wonderful season for the Lady Knights. Veteran Coach John Peoples was more than pleased with the tournament performance and "has never been prouder of a team or seen a greater effort than the girls put forth this season. We coaches have asked all year that this team give it your all and leave it all on the field…these young ladies did that and so much more in this tournament." The seniors too reflected on the season. "I’m proud to be a part of a team that did more than just settle for what was expected…we went on to leave a stamp of success," stated second baseman Hannah Sagedy. Pitcher Ashton Lesiak added, "We did so much more than meet our expectations this year. We not only performed well in the win-loss area, we grew as individuals and as a team." Three team members, Leanne Bernardez, Diana Nguyen, and Ashton Lesiak, received post-season honors. The departing seniors leave a bold challenge to returning members Leanne Bernardez, Christine Laskowski, Sarah Heard, Amber Sagedy, Carly Hudson, Laura Twomey, Kaitlyn Dunphy, and Caitlin Rusnak. As they continues to build on this legacy, these remaining team members will once again ask themselves next spring, "Rebuilding year or championship season?"

Varsity Girls Soccer Claim State Runner-Up Title - Posted: 2007-05-16
The St. Joseph’s Lady Knights Varsity Soccer Team set a goal for this spring: To reclaim the state title, which they had held for two years until surrendering it in the semi-final game last year. After a 16-3-1 regular season, the Knights entered the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) AAA playoffs ranked first in the state, and their path to that goal appeared attainable. In the end, however, it proved elusive, as they lost in the championship game to Hilton Head Preparatory School on Saturday, May 12 in Charleston. The Knights’ road to the playoffs began on Tuesday, May 8, in Columbia, with a 6-0 win against Porter Gaud of Charleston, SC. Senior Julia Gragtmans had the first three goals, followed by eighth grader Katie Lynam, sophomore Emily Zankman, and junior Jessica Benore with one goal each. Assists came from seniors Jennifer Champ and Andie Keyser-Baker, juniors Liz Sanders and Brooke Devon, freshman Katie Winebarger, and Lynam. Captain Jennifer Champ was pleased with the victory: "We had never played Porter Gaud before, but we knew what was at stake and we started the game with high intensity and focus. We connected passes well and really came together as a team." The Knights traveled back to Columbia to face Hilton Head Christian School on Thursday, May 9. After only four minutes, the Knights were down a goal, but quickly pulled it together in the tenth minute when freshman Katie Sanders played a through ball to Zankman who scored on the breakaway, sailing the ball into the bottom-right corner. The teams battled through the majority of the first and second half with the score still tied 1-1, in what Herman described as "the fastest paced game we’ve been forced to play this year." The Knights pulled ahead with only five minutes left in the game, when Lynam finished a cross in the six-yard box from Gragtmans. "All I could think was, `Don’t miss'," added Lynam. The team scrambled to maintain is slim lead during the final five minutes, and with the defense holding the line, the Knights advanced to the Championship Game. The Knights faced off against defending State Champion Hilton Head Preparatory School on Saturday. St. Joe’s played the champs to a 0-0 draw until, with nine minutes left in the first half, Hilton Head scored, making the halftime score 1-0. The Knights rallied after the half, getting off two shots at Hilton Head’s goal; however, Hilton Head subsequently scored its second goal only fifteen minutes into the second half. The remainder of the game was a pitched battle, and, despite a tremendous effort by the Knights, the game ended 2-0 in favor of Hilton Head Prep. Despite the disappointing end to the game, Coach Herman was anything but disappointed in her team, or in a season in which team success was borne out of leadership and desire. "Hilton Head Prep has a great soccer team, and if we had been able to play to our normal best, it may have been a different story. We spent a week on the road, had a three-and-half hour journey down for the final game, and did our best, but in the end, we got out-played. However, it does not take away from all of our success this season." The Lady Knights lose four seniors from this year's squad: Captains Julia Gragtmans and Jennifer Champ, both of whom have played for Herman the past four years and won two state championships; and, Caitlin Connelly and Andie Keyser-Baker, who joined the team their junior and senior years respectively. "Our seniors, including our manager, Keli Alber, set the tone for the season. Talk of teamwork is just talk until the seniors learn to `walk the talk.' These girls made our team a unit; their pride and confidence in themselves and their team is reinforced in action on and off the field. It is contagious, and it leads to championships." Three of the five seniors will go on to play collegiate sports: Gragtmans will play soccer at St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame; Keyser-Baker will play tennis at Loyola College of Maryland; and, Alber will play volleyball at Converse College in Spartanburg. All five have been named as SCISA Scholar Athletes for maintaining a 3.5 GPA and lettering in two Varsity Sports. "St. Joseph’s soccer has had such a huge effect on me," said Gragtmans. "I know that I have really grown as a leader and a person from being on this team. It’s going to be extremely difficult for me to say goodbye…the support and unity of this team is something I will treasure forever." The team's success, however, did not begin and end with the seniors; as a team, the Lady Knights tallied 90 goals for the season, with 17 of the 18 roster players scoring at least one goal, and every player earned either a goal or an assist. Sophomore Emily Zankman was chosen as SCISA All-Region and All-State. Goalie Jena Mohr, a freshman, had 138 saves, and the defense as a whole (Mohr, Champ, Connelly, junior Gabby Lutz, and freshman Anna Wilkes) totaled 179 saves for the season. "Everyone on this team has given me a season of hard play. In the final game, we played with heart, and even though we didn’t win, we walked off that field with dignity," concluded Herman. While the team may have fallen short of their ultimate goal, the Lady Knights' season was clearly one of great achievement, camaraderie, potential realized, and promise for the future.

MS Girls Soccer Team Conference Champs - Posted: 2007-05-15
The St. Joseph's Middle School Girls Soccer Team captured their first Conference Championship on Friday night, May 11, with a win over Mitchell Road Christian Academy (MRCA). The Lady Knights finished their season undefeated, scoring a total of thirty-nine goals in eleven games, with goals shared among nine of the eighteen players. Coached by SJCS faculty member Ms. Christina Hinton, the team has been known among their competitors for their passing game and teamwork all season long. Friday night's championship game demanded a higher level of play, and the Lady Knights proved that they were up to the task. MRCA scored early in the match, which only helped to charge the Knights to control the field for the balance of the game. Goalie Taylor Boyle made her presence felt, while forward Chandler Consonary kept up the pressure by scoring two goals in the second half and leading St. Joseph's to a 2-1 victory.

The first goal took a little while to earn, coming about half way through the first half when St. Joe’s sophomore Emily Zankman shot from the top of the eighteen-yard box. After that first goal, the Knights continued to strongly pressure Greenwood’s defense. "After not having played together for more than a week, we came back together as a team, playing with strength and confidence," stated senior team captain Jennifer Champ. Throughout the game, the Knights were extremely composed on the ball and showed great improvement in their connection of passes. Coach Shannon Herman was pleased with the victory, adding, "It’s always a gamble to play a game the day your team returns from a break. On the one hand, they are well rested; on the other, their touch can be off. Our touch was right on today. We moved the ball well, and played with and for each other. I can’t wait to watch more performances like this one." The Lady Knights then headed home to face the Southside Christian Sabres the very next day on their home turf. It was the second meeting for the Knights and the Sabres. St. Joseph’s opened their season with a 4-0 victory against the Sabres and repeated the performance again last Tuesday. From the starting whistle, however, it was clear that the Sabres were not going to go down without a fight. It was a very aggressive beginning, but after 15 minutes, St. Joseph’s Zankman found the Sabres’ net off a through ball from senior Captain Julia Gragtmans. Shortly after that goal, Zankman again found the net, assisted by junior Liz Sanders, closing the half with a 2-0 lead. The second half began with a quick goal from Gragtmans, assisted again by Sanders, and continued with a Knights’ display of talent and drive. The Sabres continued to fight as the Lady Knights kept their competitive spirit, which resulted in a 5-0 victory. "It was a fast-paced game and although it was tough, we played with a lot of heart and came out on top," added senior Andie Keyser-Baker After a two day respite, the Knights faced Augusta Christian at home and continued their momentum finishing the game with a 10-0 victory. The Knights started off stronger than ever with a goal from Zankman in the first two minutes of the game. Gragtmans led the Lady Knights scoring with 2 goals and 4 assists. Also scoring for the Knights was Blair Wolski, Liz Sanders, Katie Winebarger, Haley Kernell, Jena Mohr, and Gabby Lutz. "Being our third game of the week," added Assistant Coach Virginia Cotter, "I was impressed with how strong and focused the team looked." The Knights have now tallied 12 wins with 73 goals for the season, leaving them with a 12-3-1 record. They return to their home turf to face conference rival Heathwood Hall from Columbia for a second time this week. At their first face-off of the season, the Knights suffered a 2-1 loss to the Lady Highlanders in Columbia, keeping the race for play-off rankings tight.

Lady Knights Softball Surpasses Pre-Season Expectations - Posted: 2007-04-11
At the beginning of the season, the Lady Knights’ players and coaches were wondering how much of a rebuilding year this season would be. Graduating five senior starters and returning only one starter in the same position this year as last year pointed directly to a rebuilding year. An opening regular season loss to conference rival Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Columbia seemed to confirm this assessment. However five straight wins provide reason to re-evaluate this rebuilding status. The Lady Knights have won convincingly against conference and non-conference foes alike during their five-game winning streak. The two most recent outings were shutout victories against conference rival Hammond School (13-0) and Greenwood Christian (7-0). The Lady Knights performed solid offensively and defensively. The defense has benefited tremendously from strong pitching. Senior Ashton Lesiak recorded 31 strikeouts in the last two games, while allowing only five hits. The few other batters that put the ball in play were retired by solid defensive play in the field. Offensively, the team has been productive throughout the batting order. Lesiak (4 for 7), senior Katie Dutch (3 for 6), junior Christine Laskowski (3 for 6), and freshman Carly Hudson (3 for 6) all delivered big hits in the wins against Hammond and Greenwood Christian. Senior Hannah Sagedy and junior Leanne Bernardez contributed key bunts in an offensive effort that delivered 20 hits. With a 5-1 record, veteran SJCS Coach John Peoples is pleased with the team’s performance, but believes that “we can still improve on doing the little things better … things that will make the difference in a close ballgame or a championship.” By doing the little things right, the Lady Knights stand poised to make a strong run at the conference championship and to finish the year with an excellent win-loss percentage. How well the team executes and plays to its potential will definitively answer the question of how much rebuilding the team had to do. The Lady Knights are off the week of April 9 and return from Easter break to face the bulk of their schedule. The team will host cross-town rival Southside Christian School on April 16 and Hammond on April 19 and travel to Greenwood Christian on April 20.

St. Joseph’s Golfer Finishes Among Top In Greenville County Tournament - Posted: 2007-04-10
This year marked the second year that the St. Joseph’s Golf Team was invited to play in the Greenville County High School Golf Tournament. The tournament, played at the Links O’Tryon in Campobello, attracted thirteen high school golf teams with players representing the best junior golfers in the Upstate. “This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for our golfers to prepare for the upcoming, grueling South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Regional Tournament,” stated St. Joseph’s Coach Sheldon Early. Representing the St. Joseph’s Team included junior Keith Early, freshman Craig Scholz, sophomore Eric Witzke, senior Herbie Dew, and freshman Austin Cajka. For Early, Dew, and Witzke, this represented a second opportunity to compete at this venue against familiar faces. For others, it was an excellent first opportunity for them to see the talent in the area, and to learn firsthand what it takes to be competitive in next year’s event. Competing in a field of thirteen schools, the St. Joseph’s team finished in tenth place, posting a two-day team total of 657. Scores among the top ten golfers ranged from a low score of 141 to a 148, with three players tied at 148 for ninth place finishes. Keith Early was the standout player for St. Joseph’s, with a two-day total of 148, shooting a respectable 73-75 to finish ninth amongst the Top Ten. St. Joseph’s improved on its first day team total of 334 by eleven strokes, with four of its players improving on their first day rounds by two to four strokes. Following is a recap of the players and their respective scores, with the four low scores determining the team score: Early 73-75 (148), Scholz 81-78 (159), Witzke 93-87 (180), Dew 97-95 (192), and Cajka 87-83 (170). The St. Joe’s Golf Team looks ahead with two regional matches in Columbia and Augusta, followed by the State Championships in Orangeburg.

Boys Varsity Tennis 7-1 In Season Play - Posted: 2007-04-03
The St. Joseph’s Varsity Boys Tennis Team continues its march toward a berth in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) playoffs. After the sudden loss of the team’s longtime coach and mentor Allen Green, new head coach Bill Robertson was hired to step in and take the reigns. "We are thrilled to have Bill coaching at St. Joseph’s," stated SJCS Athletic Director Jan Carino. "He brings a wealth of experience to the team, as he has previously coached tennis at Christ Church and Greenville High. He is wonderful with the boys, and he truly cares about the program." Undaunted by the change, the team won seven of their first eight matches, defeating traditional powerhouses and conference rivals Heathwood Hall (5-4) and Hammond School (9-0) from Columbia. "The team’s overall match scores have been very impressive to date," stated Carino. "They have defeated their opponents handily in most matches with scores so far of 8-1, 5-3, 5-4, 8-1, 9-0, 9-0, 7-0." Their only loss was a squeaker to Heathwood Hall in a 4-5 match, with the final result being decided by the last match on the court in a tiebreaker. "These seven victories were the results of a team effort, with every player contributing to the win column," stated Coach Robertson. "Seniors Adam Broering, Thomas Powers, Michael Dion, and James Tobias have outstanding doubles records. Junior Jeff Champ earned doubles victories against Cardinal Newman and Augusta Christian. Sophomores JD Carino, Jackson DeMere and Jeffrey McMillan have achieved noteworthy results in highly contested matches. DeMere and Carino, the number one doubles team, have defeated the doubles team of every opponent to date. Carino, undefeated in singles play, has come from behind in several matches to earn victories. DeMere, the number one singles player, remains undefeated against the opponent’s best players. Jeffrey McMillan, currently the team’s most improved player, has won two out of three singles matches since earning his starting position. Kevin Hart, the lone freshman on the team, has become a great asset to the team in both singles and doubles. His win in the Hammond match sealed the victory for St. Joseph’s." In the match on March 28 against Hammond Academy, the Knights won 7-0, but the score is hardly indicative of how close the match really was. "This was the fourth match in six days for the Knights, and the team had to dig deep to secure the win. St. Joseph’s had played Augusta Christian the previous Friday and Monday and played Heathwood Hall on Tuesday, and they were tired going into the match last week against Hammond," added Robertson. DeMere, at number one singles, had the easiest match against Hammond, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-4. At number two singles, Thomas Powers started off strong with a first set score of 6-2, but then had a battle on his hands as his opponent made a strong comeback in the second set. Powers was able to hold him off and win the match with a 7-6 (12-10) second set victory. At number three singles, JD Carino struggled in the first set losing 4-6, but was able to battle back and take the match, winning the second set 7-5 and the third set tiebreaker 10-6. At number four singles, James Tobias won convincingly by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Kevin Hart, playing number five singles, had a marathon match with both sets going to tiebreakers, but he held on for the victory, defeating his opponent 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9). St. Joseph’s number six player, Jeffrey McMillan, played a great match as well. McMillan lost the first set 3-6, but fought back and defeated his opponent 7-6 in the second set, then won the third set tiebreaker 10-5. The number one doubles team of DeMere and Carino defeated Hammond 8-3 to seal the victory for the Knights. "The fact that the boys were able to pull off this tough win against Hammond proves that the successes this team has enjoyed to date are not a fluke," stated Carino. "With only one year-round player on the team, this is a group of very talented players and very strong athletes and this is quite evident when you watch them compete on the court." The Knights have the week of April 9-13 off for Easter Break, and then return to host Shannon Forest at home on Monday April 16 at 4:00.

Baseball Team Looks To Overcome Early Season Losses - Posted: 2007-03-27
The St Joseph’s Knights began their season with three away games in early March and suffered losses to Southside Christian, Greenwood Christian, and conference foe Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Columbia. In each game, the Knights were leading after the first inning, but that lead slipped away as the game went on. "We could have easily started the season 3-0 rather than 0-3," said tenth year Head Coach Steve Grant. "Pitching seems to be the area where we started out struggling the most." In the Southside Christian game, pitcher Justin Mohr gave up just three hits, but walked nearly ten batters. In the Greenwood Christian loss, pitcher Joseph Hartley gave up just two hits, but walked several players resulting in several unearned runs. The Cardinal Newman game was lost on the last pitch of the game when Mohr threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded, allowing the winning run to score. "The bright side of these losses is that we have hit the ball fairly consistently, and I would have to say that our defense is good," added Grant. The Knights are led by the hitting of seniors Justin Mohr, Ben Coffey, and Drew Cajka. Also making consistent contribution at the plate are juniors Austin Stein, Joseph Hartley, and freshman Connor Bolton. All these players are hitting over .300 and playing well in the field. The Knights first win came at home the week of March 19 against Greenwood Christian. Coffey pitched a complete game while striking out eleven and giving up just three hits. "Ben pitched great and the team hit the ball well. We also played a perfect game in the field," added Coach Grant. The next day, the Knights traveled down to play last year’s State Champion Augusta Christian. The Knights were humbled 15-0. "It was a bad game against a very good team," stated Grant. "We knew going into the season that they would be the best team we would face." Later in the week, the Knights took on a team from Pittsburgh, PA under the lights at Furman University. The Knights lost 9-1 in a game where they gave up six runs in one inning. "Take out that inning and it was a pretty good game," added Grant. On Saturday, March 24, the Knights played at home against conference foe Heathwood Hall School. The Knights play nearly perfect ball and won the game 10-4. "Mohr gave us adequate pitching and he was supported by good defense," said Coach Grant. "He also helped his own cause by going 4-4. Cajka came in the last inning and pitched shutout relief." The Knights play at home on Tuesday, March 27 against conference opponent Hammond School from Columbia.

Boys Tennis Swings Into High Gear - Posted: 2007-03-21
With only a few weeks into the season, the St. Joseph’s Varsity Tennis Team is off to one of the strongest starts ever. Currently holding a record of 3-0, the team opened the season with an 8-0 win over Southside Christian School, followed by a first time ever win over powerhouse Spartanburg Day School, with a final match score of 5-3. "This is the first time in eight years that we have defeated Spartanburg Day School in tennis," stated Athletic Director Jan Carino. "They have a very strong program at their school and we always anticipate that our match with them will be very tough." In their third match of the season this past week, St. Joseph’s defeated conference rival Heathwood Hall 5-4. The match was decided in the last doubles game with sophomores Jackson DeMere and JD Carino winning a nail biter that went into a tie breaker that St. Joseph’s eventually won 7-3. "I am very excited about our season. Based on our performance to date, I feel that we have a good chance of advancing to the state playoffs this year," added senior captain Thomas Powers. Returning players this year, in addition to Powers, are seniors Michael Dion, James Tobias, junior Jeff Champ, sophomores JD Carino and Jackson DeMere, and freshman Kevin Hart. New to the varsity team this year are senior Adam Broering and sophomore Jeffrey McMillan. "At one point, we weren’t sure if we would keep this team together this year," added Jan Carino. "Our head coach of eight years, Allen Green, passed away unexpectedly two weeks into the season. This was such a shock to all of us, and the boys took it hard. Several of our players had known Allen for many years, so it was especially tough on them. I feel that the boys know that Allen is watching over them now and they are performing as well as they are because of that." St. Joseph’s will host conference rival Cardinal Newman at home on Wednesday, March 21 at 4:00 P.M.

Lady Knights Soccer Gets Off On The Right Foot - Posted: 2007-03-14
The Lady Knights began their season with the momentum that they had hoped for. At the team’s opening game on Tuesday, March 6 at Southside Christian School, the Lady Knights emerged victorious over the Lady Sabers with a 4-0 win. The first goal came off eighth grader Blaire Wolski’s assist to senior Captain Julia Gragtmans, just minutes before the half time whistle. Shortly after the half, Gragtmans found the net again assisted by sophomore Emily Zankman. Finishing off the Knight’s evening, freshman Anna Wilkes scored back-to-back goals in the last eight minutes from Zankman’s and junior Brooke Devon’s crosses. After a one-day break, the Knights traveled to Columbia, SC to play archrival Cardinal Newman Catholic School on Thursday, March 8. In a heated and hard fought battle, the Knights avenged their last season loss, defeating the Cardinals 2-0. The Knights first goal came late in the first half, when freshman Katie Winebarger beat two defenders and shot from 35 yards out, sailing the ball just under the Cardinal goalie’s dive. The Knights then battled another twenty minutes before Gragtmans beat three Cardinal defenders on the dribble to score the last goal of the game. Knights’ freshman goalie, Jena Mohr had eight saves, with defenders senior Caitlin Connelly and junior Gabby Lutz each blocking a Cardinal opportunity on the goal line. "I was extremely proud of the way we played for our first conference game and our most anticipated game of the season. We have a very promising season ahead of us," stated Connelly. The Knights began their games at home on Friday, March 9, defeating Spartanburg Day School by a score of 7-0. Gragtmans and Zankman each scored two goals, while Winebarger earned her second goal of the season. Junior Jessica Benore and eighth grader Katie Lynam both earned their first goal of the season. Assists came from freshmen Emily Coggins, Katie Sanders, and Wilkes, as well as Gragtmans and Lutz. Coach Shannon Herman was pleased with the girls' opening week, commenting, "I knew we had the potential to have an excellent season, but this was a tough week. We had the stress of the first game, playing our toughest rival, and three games in a week. My team showed me more than talent; they showed me the composure and drive necessary to carry us through a winning season." The Knights will travel to Macon, Georgia this weekend, where they will play in Stratford Academy's opening season tournament. Stratford Academy is the GISA nine-time AAA State Champion.
