Faculty Member Selected To Participate In Summer Conference - Posted: 2006-06-20

History Department Chair Mrs. Meby Carr was one of twenty teachers chosen from among many applicants across the state to participate in Clemson University's Summer Conference July 10-14. The conference will focus on the contributions of South Carolina to American History and this summer's topic is on John C. Calhoun. Graduate credit and a stipend are awarded at the end of the week.

 


Rising sophomore accepted into the Governor's School Math and Science Summer Program - Posted: 2006-06-13

St. Joseph’s Catholic School rising sophomore Travis Dziad has been accepted into the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Summer Science Program. Travis will attend the summer session titled "Mathematics of Biology" which runs the week of June 25-July 1 on the GSSM campus in Hartsville, SC.

 


Rising junior competes in Simpsonville Sunrise Run - Posted: 2006-06-13

Congratulations to rising junior Brandon Arquette who ran his first 8K race on Saturday, June 10th, finishing 35th out of 394 runners and placing fourth in his age group in the Simpsonville Sunrise Run.

 


Rising Junior Qualifies for Golf Invitational - Posted: 2006-06-12

St. Joseph's Catholic School rising junior Keith Early was selected to participate in the Bill Dickey Invitational Junior Golf Championship June 15-17 in Orlando, FL. The event, limited to a field of forty-four players, provides talented junior golf students a competitive venue for networking with golf industry professionals and corporate executives. Keith was also accepted into the East Coast Regional Open Qualifier for the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Keith will be competing against golfers from around the country for 10 of 30 spots in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Labor Day weekend.

High School Students Chosen For 2006 Youth In Government Leadership Positions - Posted: 2006-06-08

   

     

Several high school students have been chosen by the YMCA Youth In Government staff to hold leadership positions for the 2006 Youth In Government Conference to be held in Columbia, SC in December. These students are: John Capelle, Premier Presider; Katie Eichler, Clerk; Brelyn Holmes, Chief Clerk; Sarah Joseph, Committee Chair; Maryjoy Lepak, Clerk; William McClintock, Upper Chamber Party Leader; Abbey Moon, Committee Chair; Virginia Pazdan, Clerk; and Christine Reese, Premier Chamber Floor Leader. These students competed with students from across the state to fill highly competitive leadership positions. This will be the fifth year St. Joseph’s has participated in Youth In Government.

Class of 2006 Sets New Scholarship Record - Posted: 2006-05-31

The Class of 2006, consisting of 58 members, set a new school record for scholarships and grants totaling over $3.7 million dollars in offers. Forty-eight members of the class received scholarship and grant money averaging over $77,700 per student. This figure includes the SC Life Scholarships for thirty-one students, Palmetto Fellows Scholarships for six students, and full tuition scholarships for four students. The Class of 2006 also added thirty-four new colleges and universities to the list of schools to which the previous 236 graduates have been accepted, including The Art Institute of Chicago, Boston College, Davidson College, The University of the South, and Washington & Lee University, to name a few. School Awards Top Three Honors - Posted: 2006-05-30

  

St. Joseph’s Catholic School recently awarded members of the Class of 2006 with the school’s top three awards. The Outstanding Christian Athlete Award was given to Carrie Powers. Voted on by the faculty and coaches, this award is presented annually to the graduating student athlete who best exhibits the qualities envisioned in the mission and philosophy of St. Joseph’s Catholic School, both on and off the field of play. The Father Fox Award, presented to Caitlin Rinz, is awarded annually to the graduating senior who most displays Christian charity and compassion. Voted on by the faculty, this award best epitomizes the qualities of Father Fox, the first priest to celebrate Mass regularly at St. Joseph’s Catholic School. The Redemptoris Custos Award was presented to Sally Cade Holmes. This award, voted on by the faculty, is given annually to the student who excels in scholarship, Christian leadership, and service and who best exemplifies the virtues of St. Joseph and the principles for which the school was founded. Redemptoris Custos, a name given to St. Joseph by the Church meaning "Guardian of the Redeemer," is the highest honor a student may receive at St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

Congratulations to the following students who were commended at the school’s first annual “Deo Gratias” End of Year Celebration held on Saturday, May 20:  High School students Nicholas Hannouche, Jessica Itzel, Betsy Kraus, Jennifer Mayernik, Caitlin McCaustland, William McClintock, Patrick McLeer, Brandon Miller, Thomas Powers, and John Waluskiewicz; Middle School students  Varun Gopal, Hannah Grim, Seth Kiser, Kelsey Mazur, Daniel McCullough, Tara McGarry, Tristan Sexton, and Theresa Wersinger.  These students were recognized for their efforts and hard work while attempting to live out the true spirit and mission of the school during this school year.

 


Student Athletes Named All Conference Players - Posted: 2006-05-24

    

    

St. Joseph's Catholic School student-athletes Leanne Bernardez, Mary Danahy, Kelly Eppinger, Lauren Hawkins, Ashton Lesiak were named South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) All Conference players in softball, with Kelly Eppinger being named Co-MVP of the conference. In addition, the following student-athletes were named SCISA All Conference Players in their respective sport: Justin Mohr, baseball; Austin Fagan, Julia Gragtmans, Emily Zankman, girls soccer; Jackson DeMere, boys tennis.

 


Eighth Grade Students Commended in K of C Essay Contest - Posted: 2006-05-23

    

Five eighth grade students from St. Joseph's Catholic School were recently commended in the Knights of Columbus George L. Gagnon Council 8182 essay contest. Lisha O'Boyle captured first place in the essay contest and received a $50.00 prize. Faris Armaly, Michael Baliker, Katie Fountain, and Theresa Wersinger were awarded Certificates of Merit for outstanding participation. These students composed essays between 500-750 words using the theme "The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society" and the teachings of Pope John Paul II as a reference. Members of the local community judged the essays according to overall impression, content, and style.

 


Student-Athletes Named North-South All Star Players - Posted: 2006-05-22

  

St. Joseph's Catholic School student-athletes Kelly Eppinger, Lauren Hawkins, and Ashton Lesiak were recently named North-South Softball All-Stars by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) 2006 Coaches Association. Junior Justin Mohr was named a North-South Baseball All-Star player. This group of athletes played in the SCISA North-South All-Star Games on Saturday, May 20 at Orangeburg Prep in Orangeburg, SC.

Freshman Earns Eagle Scout Recognition - Posted: 2006-05-17

Congratulations to freshman Andy Novak who has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Andy, a member of Boy Scout Troop #707 in Simpsonville, received his award at a special ceremony held on May 13th.

 


Middle School Council Raises $1,500 To Aid Katrina Victims - Posted: 2006-05-16

Congratulations to the Middle School students for their efforts in raising $1,500.00 for Coast Episcopal School, a K-8 school in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The money was raised by the Middle School Council’s successful efforts in organizing a "St. Joe's Idol" Karaoke Contest, the Spring Fling party, and the Dance, Dance Revolution Marathon. Outgoing Middle School Council President Srivatsan Sudarshan and incoming Middle School Council President Mary Kate McClincotck recently presented a check to SJCS Headmaster Keith Kiser. SJCS faculty members Mrs. Megan Koon and Mr. Ryan Koon serves as the group's Faculty Advisors.

 


Freshman Serves As Japanese Translator - Posted: 2006-05-15

SJCS ninth grader Brendan Wattterson volunteered over twenty hours at the International Robotics Championship for FIRST Legos as a Japanese translator for the visiting Japanese team from Tokyo and Yokohama April 26th, 27th, and 28th. Brendan, who speaks Japanese fluently, assisted the team with directions in and outside of the Georgia Dome and translated for the team during competition and social events. His assistance was most critical in translating between the judges and the Japanese teams, and he was asked to assist next year as well as being invited to visit the teams when he goes to Japan this summer. Brendan earned his foreign language requirements at St. Joseph’s by taking all three of the Japanese language entrance examinations at Clemson University, where he continues his Japanese studies on Saturdays with Professor Shimura. As the only American studying alongside Japanese high school seniors, Brendan is considering adding another course of study this summer that would involve writing 800 word essays in Japanese each week.

High School Students Selected for Summer YIG Program - Posted: 2006-05-10

 

Congratulations to junior Zachary Beck and sophomore Christine Reese who were recently accepted as participants to the Youth In Government's Committee on National Affairs (CONA) following a rigorous application process. Twenty students from each state, with all fifty states represented, are chosen to meet, discuss, and propose legislation on national affairs. The meeting will take place the week of July 1-8 in Black Mountain, NC.

 


Rising Seniors Selected For Boys State - Posted: 2006-05-09

 

St. Joseph’s Catholic School rising seniors Herbie Dew and Matt Sohner have been selected to attend the 2006 Palmetto Boys State Encampment June 11th through June 17th on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Boys State, a long established tradition in South Carolina, offers young men from across the state an opportunity to gain valuable and practical experience in the formation and operation of government at the local and statewide level.

 


Faculty Members Selected To Read AP Exams - Posted: 2006-05-08

  

Dr. John Devanny, Mrs. Meby Carr, and Mr. George Carr have all been invited to read Advanced Placement exams this summer. Dr. Devanny will be reading AP European exams in Lincoln, Nebraska and Mrs. Carr will be reading AP U.S. History exams in San Antonio, Texas the week of June 2-8. Mr. Carr will be reading AP Statistics exams in Lincoln, Nebraska the week of June 12-18.

 


Juniors Qualify for National Merit Scholarship Program - Posted: 2006-05-05

   

   

St. Joseph’s Catholic School rising seniors Elizabeth Andrews, Nicole Azores-Gococo, Emily Dziad, Morgan Klinzing, Ashton Lesiak, William McClintock, and Abbey Moon have all qualified to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Based upon their 2005 PSAT scores, these students are among the 50,000 highest scoring participants who qualified for this prestigious honor, selected from a group of over one million students nationwide. From these 50,000 high scorers, approximately 16,000 will be named in September as National Merit Semifinalists.

 


Sophomore Earns Girl Scout's Highest Award - Posted: 2006-05-04

Congratulations to SJCS sophomore Sarah Moore for earning the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. In completing the required badges and career requirements, Sarah exhibited strong leadership qualities and provided outstanding service to others. For her Gold Award Project, she initiated and oversaw the development of the St. Joseph’s middle school newspaper, The Mid-Knight Quarterly. Sarah is a member of the Girl Scout Old 96 Council and will receive her award at a special ceremony to be held on May 18.

Rising Ninth Graders Receive St. Joseph's Scholar Awards - Posted: 2006-04-30

  

Congratulations to St. Joseph’s Catholic School rising ninth graders Lauren Visin and Stella Watson who were recently selected as the recipients of the St. Joseph’s Scholar Award.  This scholarship, awarded annually to two incoming freshmen, recognizes academic excellence.

 


Faculty Member Selected For Summer Seminar - Posted: 2006-04-28

SJCS Theology Department faculty member Mr. Chris Chapman has been selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of twenty-eight summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Endowment is a federal agency that supports seminars at colleges and universities so that teachers can study with experts in various fields in the Humanities. Mr. Chapman will participate in a seminar entitled "Paradise Lost and the Contemporary Reader." The five-week program will be held this summer at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. 

 


Three juniors selected for Governor's School Summer Leadership Program - Posted: 2006-04-27

  

Three St. Joseph's Catholic School juniors, John Capelle, William McClintock, and Abbey Moon, have been selected to attend the Governor"s School of South Carolina Summer Leadership Program. This four-week residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students runs from June 11 to July 8 at the College of Charleston. These students qualified for this honor from among a highly competitive group of high school students across the state. Since 1976, thousands of South Carolina students have graduated from the Governor’s School summer scholars program. 

 


Junior Completes Charlottesville Marathon - Posted: 2006-04-25

Congratulations to junior Graham McDonald who ran the Charlottesville Marathon on April 17 in Virginia. This marathon, acclaimed to be the most scenic in the east, was the third marathon Graham has entered since cross-country season ended in October. The heat and the hills of this marathon added to his previous best marathon time of 4:03:47, but he was able to finish the Charlottesville race in 4:21:31. This put Graham in the top half of all finishers and the top third of all entrants in the Charlottesville Marathon. He also placed fifth in his division.

 


Junior Receives Audition Callback for National Production - Posted: 2006-04-24

SJCS junior Zachary Beck has been called back to continue the audition process for the Thespian national production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie," the Student Edition. Callbacks will be held at the International Thespian Festival June 19-24, 2006 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

 


Students Display Art at Greenville Tech High School Art Exhibition - Posted: 2006-04-15

Art students Jackie Boyle, John Capelle, Katie Eichler, Jessica Dinh, and John Waluskiewicz currently have their artwork on display at the sixteenth annual High School Art Exhibition.  This exhibit, sponsored by the Greenville Technical College Department of Visual Arts, runs through April 28 at Greenville Tech's Greer campus.  Families are encouraged to visit the exhibition to view these and other art works from around the Upstate.

Senator DeMint visits SJCS - Posted: 2006-04-11

United States Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) visited St. Joseph's Catholic School U.S. History and A.P. Government classes on Tuesday, April 11. Senator DeMint discussed his background and rise in politics, as well as fielding questions from the students on his job responsibilities and current issues.

 


Senior Receives GE Award - Posted: 2006-04-11

Congratulations to senior Jessica Itzel who has been designated as a recipient of a 2006 GE Star Award, a financial scholarship awarded from the GE Foundation and the Institute of International Education. In addition, the school also received a financial award in recognition of Jessica’s outstanding achievement.

 


Seventh graders qualify for Duke University TIP Program state recognition - Posted: 2006-04-10

Congratulations to ten seventh grade students who qualified for state recognition after completing the college entrance SAT test as a result of the Duke TIP program. Cole Buchanan, Clark Burgess, Taylor Jupena, Theresa Krupka, Ellie Larson, Mary Kate McClintock, Jeremy Mehl, Tristan Sexton, Cara Sinicropi, and Arianna Wise all qualified for state recognition by scoring at or above the national average on a least one part of the SAT. The Duke University Talent Identification Program helps identify academically talented seventh grade students based on standardized test scores. At St. Joseph's, the Iowa Tests that middle school students take in October serve as the qualifying tests for this program. For the 2005-06 academic year, thirty-eight St. Joseph's seventh grade students, representing 61% of their class, qualified for participation in the Duke TIP program. From that group, twenty nine students completed the SAT test.

Freshman Captures First Place in Junior Dragster Race - Posted: 2006-04-05

Congratulations to freshman William Joseph who took first place in the NHRA Outlaw 330 Junior Dragster Race in Albany, Georgia on Saturday, April 1. A total of 26 cars, from twenty states, with drivers ages 8-17 competed. William won an unprecedented first place for the second year in a row at this event.

 


Eighth Grader Places Second in State Science Fair - Posted: 2006-04-04

Congratulations to St. Joseph’s Catholic School eighth grader Lee Barber who placed second in the junior division (grades 6-8) at the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) State Science Fair held in Orangeburg on Wednesday, March 29. Eighth grader Erika Robinson received Honorable Mention. Five other SJCS middle school students who placed well in the SJCS Science Fair also presented their projects at the competition: Alex Davidson, Jacob Hanna, Shelly Mamo, Katie McLellan, and Nikki Scarlett. Over 200 students from around the state were represented at the event.

 


Sophomore Wins Awards at Greenville County Science and Engineering Fair - Posted: 2006-04-03

St. Joseph’s Catholic School sophomore Daniel DeMars won three awards and placed third overall in the high school division at the 2006 Greenville County Science and Engineering Fair. His project, titled "Bio-Diesel: A Local Alternative to Mid East Oil," allowed fuel, which he made from used cooking oil, to be tested in the car of Daniels’ chemistry teacher, Paul Barra. Daniel received an all-expense paid trip as an observer to the International Science Fair to be held May 7-12 in Indianapolis, IN. His project also received three awards: The Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Geology Award from the Vulcan Materials Company, and the Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Science from the Sierra Club of Greenville. The four awards carried cash prizes totaling $175.00.

 


National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society Induct New Members - Posted: 2006-03-31

The school's annual induction ceremony for both the St. Joseph’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society was held on Wednesday, March 22, in the school chapel.

    §       The National Honor Society, one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students, inducted thirty-four new members after being selected by a Faculty Council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher as well as demonstrating leadership and service through activities in both the school and the community. Additionally, character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty. Seventh Graders Named Winners in Greenville County Soil Conservation Contest - Posted: 2006-03-29

  

Congratulations to seventh graders Theresa Krupka, Olivia Leftwich, and Katie Travan who were recently named winners in the conservation essay contest on "Why Our Lives Depend On Soil?" These winning entries were selected as three of the best among several hundred that were submitted for judging. The contest, sponsored by the Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, will honor each student with a $50.00 check at their annual awards banquet on Thursday, May 4 at the Embassy Suites in Greenville.

 


St. Joseph's Brothers Break State Records at Regional Swim Meet - Posted: 2006-03-28

 

Congratulations to seventh grader Jared Kauffman who placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.56) and first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1.04.76) in the 11-12 age group, setting new meet records in both events at the Southern Zone Eastern Section Age Group Championship Swim Meet held in Charlotte, NC March 16 through March 19. In addition, he placed first in the 50-yard freestyle event, second in the 200-yard breaststroke, second in 1000-yard freestyle, second in the 50-yard butterfly, second in 100-yard individual medley, third in 100-yard freestyle, and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Jared's free relay team and medley relay teams each placed third.

In the 13-14 age group, ninth grader Graham Kauffman placed third in the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 22.68, qualifying him to go on to the YMCA Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale FL. His 400-yard freestyle relay team placed third and set a new South Carolina state record and his medley relay team place fourth. He also placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle, eleventh in the 100 breaststroke, and competed in the 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle events

The boys’ team, Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club in Duncan, placed second overall out of 48 teams at the meet.

Sixth Grader Performing In Children's Theatre Production - Posted: 2006-03-23

SJCS sixth grader Daniel Sokol is currently performing in the Greer Children's Theatre production of "Aladdin and his Wonderful Magical Lamp". Daniel plays the role of the Royal Executioner. Performances are March 24, 25, 31, and April 1 at 7:00 P.M., March 26 and April 2 at 3:00 P.M., and March 27 at 9:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. at the J. Harley Bonds Career Center in Greer. Six St. Joseph's Seniors Named Palmetto Fellows - Posted: 2006-03-17

      

St. Joseph's Catholic School recently named six seniors for early awards as Palmetto Fellows: Jill Lutz, Caitlin McLear, Daniel Posa, Carrie Powers, Caitlin Rinz, and Russ Weems. These students were recognized for their outstanding high school academic achievements and the academic promise they show for studies in higher education. The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program was designed to recognize academically talented high school seniors in South Carolina and to encourage those individuals to attend college in state. Palmetto Fellows hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, and score at least 1200 on the SAT I or score at least 27 on the ACT. Each Palmetto Fellow may receive a scholarship of up to $6,700 annually, renewable for three years, to pursue a baccalaureate degree at a participating college or university in South Carolina.

 


Three SJCS Student Council Members Elected To Statewide Offices - Posted: 2006-03-16

Congratulations to the members of the St. Joseph’s Student Council who were elected to statewide offices at the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) State Convention held March 12-14 in Myrtle Beach. Junior Zachary Beck was elected President, junior Justin Mohr was elected Recording Secretary, and junior Thomas Powers was appointed Corresponding Secretary for the entire SCISA State Student Council Board. For the second year in a row, St. Joseph’s won the Student Council Scrapbook Competition. Katie Eichler, Brelyn Holmes, Julianne Laskowski, and Maryjoy Lepak led this effort and the scrapbook is now on display in the school’s front lobby. The entire delegation and school also received a certificate of recognition for their efforts in raising money for the American Red Cross to benefit Katrina victims. SJCS Rugby Club Awarded Grant - Posted: 2006-03-15

St. Joseph's Catholic School Rugby Club was awarded a grant for equipment valued at approximately $400.00 from the U.S. Rugby Football Foundation. The rugby club is currently an intramural program training twice a week and serving twenty-three boys. SJCS Director of Curriculum John Devanny serves as the team moderator and coach.

 


Fine Arts Director Receives Outstanding Theatre Award - Posted: 2006-03-14

Congratulations to SJCS Fine Arts Director Anita Sleeman who recently received the 2006 Outstanding Theatre Educator Award from the South Carolina Theatre Association. This honor is awarded to selected K-12 theatre teachers who have made the most significant contributions to theatre students in South Carolina. Sleeman, who earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, also serves as the Faculty Moderator to the school’s International Thespian Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the St. Joseph's Jesters.

 


Junior Named 2006 All-USA High School Musician Semi-Finalist - Posted: 2006-03-13

St. Joseph's Catholic School junior Morgan Klinzing has been accepted as a 2006 All-USA High School Musician Semi Finalist and has qualified to advance to the next level of competition. The All-USA High School Musicians is sponsored by Music Educator's National Conference and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

 


Fine Arts Students Audition at Southeastern Theatre Conference - Posted: 2006-03-10

Fine Arts students recently auditioned for colleges at the Southeastern Theatre Conference Convention in Orlando, FL the weekend of March 3-5.   With over sixty-five colleges and universities represented, three seniors and four juniors were called back to over forty different schools and several offers were made. Students also spent time attending workshops, such as Costume Rendering Techniques, as well as listening to keynote addresses and master classes by instructors such as Jane McCullough Artistic Director of the English Chamber Theatre.  Mrs. Anita Sleeman, SJCS Fine Arts Director, along with Mrs. June Horton, SJCS Dance Instructor and Choreographer, accompanied the students to Florida.


 


Math Students Excel at Regional Math Meet - Posted: 2006-03-09

SJCS high school math students competed in the 29th Annual College of Charleston Math Meet on Saturday, February 25. The event, sponsored by the College of Charleston Math Department, brings talented high school students to campus for a day of challenging, entertaining, and innovative math competition. The event also helps high school teachers to motivate their students to excel and to recognize the role of mathematics outside the classroom. Over six hundred students from fifty-three schools and six states throughout the southeast competed in the event. On the Level Three Test, senior Caitlin McLear was the top St. Joseph’s scorer, ranking 14th out of 124 in-state students with an overall score of 83rd percentile. Seniors Brandon Miller, Carrie Powers, and Russ Weems scored in the 70th percentile or higher out of 242 total students taking this test. On the Level Two Test, sophomore Daniel DeMars placed second out of the 108 in-state students who competed on this level with an overall score of 98 percentile. Also on the Level two Test, junior Nicole Azores-Gococo ranked 23 out of 156 total students with an 80th percentile overall. On the Level One Test, freshman Travis Dziad placed 20th (80th percentile overall) and sophomore Margo Toney placed 24th (77th percentile overall) out of 124 in-state students. SJCS Math Department faculty members Mrs. Mary Beth Hart and Mr. George Gabor accompanied the students to Charleston.

 


Junior Qualifies for USA Biology Olympiad Semifinals - Posted: 2006-03-08

Congratulations to SJCS junior Ryan Evans who qualified for the semifinals in the USA Biology Olympiad competition. Ryan scored a 28 on this February 9, 2006 national exam, placing him well above the average score of 17.5, and placing him in the top ten percent of more than 5,000 test-takers nationwide. "This was a very difficult exam, designed to challenge even the most gifted biology students," said Marcy Reed of the Center for Excellence in Education based in McLean, VA. Ryan will now compete in the March 13-17 USA Biology Olympiad Semifinal Exam. Winners from this exam will go on to compete in the national finals at George Mason University and finally, the international Olympiad in Rio Cuarto, Argentina.

High School Students Qualify for Invitational Math Exam - Posted: 2006-03-06

High school students recently participated in the American Mathematics Competition, a series of exams leading up to the International Math Olympiad. Honor is awarded to those students who earn the highest score at each school on these two tests. On the AMC 10, Ashley Colquhoun, Margo Toney, and Ahmad Dbouk scored the highest at the school. On the AMC 12, Daniel DeMars, Caitlin McLear, Carrie Powers, Nicole Azores-Gococo, and Thomas Powers were the highest scoring students and all five of these students qualified for competition in the American Invitational Mathematics Exam, a three-hour test composed of fifteen questions, to be administered at the school on Tuesday, March 7.

 


Freshman Places Well in Gymnastics Competition - Posted: 2006-03-05

Congratulations to freshman Mariam Armaly who placed second overall in the Level Ten Gymnastics Competition held February 9 in Myrtle Beach, SC. In individual competition, she placed first on flour with a score of 9.325, first on vault with a score of 9.225, second on beam with a score 8.55, and third on bars.  Mariam will now compete in the State Championships March 10-12 in Greenwood, SC.

 


Seventh Grader Captures Ten State Swimming Titles - Posted: 2006-03-02

SJCS seventh grader Jared Kauffman captured ten state swimming titles out of eleven events at the SC State Championship Swim Meet held in Spartanburg the weekend of February 17-20. Jared placed first in the 100, 200, 500, 1000 Freestyle, 50, 100, 200 Breaststroke, 100 Fly, and the 100 and 200 Individual Medley. He took second place in the 50 Freestyle. Jared also broke the state record in the 50 Yard Breaststroke by posting a time of 29.60, and at the time of the meet, this time placed him first in the nation in this event. He was also the high point winner for his age group.

Several other SJCS swimmers also performed well at the state meet. Freshman Graham Kauffman placed in the top ten in all seven of his qualifying events, capturing the state title in the 50 Freestyle. He also took third place in 100 Breaststroke, fourth place in 100 Freestyle, fifth place in 200 Breaststroke, sixth place in 200 Freestyle, eighth place in 200 Individual Medley, and ninth place in the 500 Freestyle. Junior Morgan Klinzing qualified for seven events: 50, 100, 200 Freestyle, 100, 200 Breaststroke, and 100, 200 Backstroke. She finished ninth in the 50 Freestyle. Junior Patricia Nelsen swam the 200 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, and the 1650 Freestyle, finishing sixth in the 200 Butterfly and eighth in the 1650 Freestyle. Senior and SJCS Team Captain Jill Holliday swam the 200 Backstroke, ending an eleven-year swimming career.

 


"Gallowglass" High School Household Named Intramural Football Champs - Posted: 2006-03-01

Congratulations to the Gallowglass Household (Mr. Barra/Mr. Dziad’s household) on winning the 2006 SJCS Intramural Football Championship Competition by beating the Gryffin Household (Mr. Chapman’s household) by a score of 14-0. According to SJCS Football Commissioner Dr. John Devanny, the Gallowglass Household "dominated" early on the running of quarterback Ben Coffey. Senior Matthew Cassabon scored on a long pass from Coffey, junior Michael LaDue ran in a 20-yard reverse and sophomore Danny Conley caught a tipped 2-point conversion pass. The Gryffins staged a late comeback try on an interception by senior Matt Polowczuk, but it proved to be too little, too late against the outstanding defensive line play of Jean Pierre Wersinger, B.J. Golson, Joseph Hartley, and James Tobias. In what was the battle of two underdogs, the Gallowglass and Gryffin Households were seeded third and fourth respectively in the championship tournament played out on the campus grounds February 23.

 


Middle School Students Perform Well at State Spelling Bee - Posted: 2006-02-28

  

Three middle school students represented the school in the South Carolina Independent Schools Association State Spelling Bee held at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree, SC on February 15. Eighth grader Kailey Bray and sixth graders Mitchell Jones and Daniel Sokol qualified for the state championship by virtue of their performance at the Regional Spelling Bee held in January. Kailey finished third in the state in the eighth grade championship round, while Daniel and Mitchell finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the sixth grade state competition. The team is coached by Mr. Joel Brandon, SJCS Middle School Literature and History Teacher and Mr. Jay Tierney, SJCS Middle School English and History Teacher.

 


Middle School Quiz Bowl Team Wins State Title - Posted: 2006-02-27

The St. Joseph's Middle School Quiz Bowl Team captured the State Championship Title at the South Carolina Independent School Association State Quiz Bowl Championship held February 21 in Orangeburg, SC. In only their second year of competition, the team, comprised of eighth graders Faris Armaly, Olivia Belton (captain), Nikki Scarlett, Srivatsan Sudarshan, seventh graders Kaitlyn Dunphy and Jeremy Mehl, entered the state championship round as the top seed among the final nine teams after proceeding through their regional competition undefeated. St. Joseph’s captured the state title by defeating The Timmerman School of Columbia and St. Anne's Catholic School of Sumter in the championship round. The team is coached by Mr. Joel Brandon, SJCS Middle School Literature and History Teacher and Mrs. Megan Koon, SJCS Middle School Literature and High School English Teacher.

 

 


Fine Arts Students Receive Accolades At State Thespian Festival - Posted: 2006-02-24

The St. Joseph’s International Thespian Society Chapter 6388 participated in the Palmetto Dramatics Association and South Carolina Thespian Festival February 17-19 at Converse College in Spartanburg. Many of the entries will be presented at the school’s upcoming "Evening of the Arts" on March 17 and several winners qualified to compete in the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE in June 2006.

§ Senior Sally Cade Holmes was the recipient of one of five thespian scholarships in technical theatre. She received a superior rating for acting and a good rating in solo musical theatre. Her solo acting will now advance to nationals. In addition, she was selected as one of two actors to present two monologues in front of the entire delegation.

§ Zachary Beck, Breyln Holmes, Sally Cade Holmes, Ben Novotny, and Matt Polowczuk received an excellent rating in play performance for the school’s largest entry, the one-act play "Man, Woman, Flower." The other group entry, a scene from "Twelve Angry Men," received a good rating and featured Brian Burnley, George Patrick McLeer, Drew Porter, Daniel Posa, Josh Smith, Zach Svec, and Matt Terry.

§ Both duet acting entries of Hannah Sagedy and Sarah Moore and Danielle Statuto and Emily Kiser received good ratings. A duet musical entry by Maryjoy Lepak and Danielle Statuto received an excellent rating and another duet musical entry of Zachary Beck and Ben Novotny received a good rating. In duet mimes, Drew Porter and Daniel Posa received an excellent rating.

In addition, the following students were rated in individual events:

§ Zachary Beck received an excellent rating in scenic design, a good rating in solo musical theatre, honorable mention for best acting, and will advance to nationals.

§ Brian Burnley received a superior rating in solo acting.

§ Lilly Egan received a superior rating in publicity design, a good rating in acting, and will advance to nationals.

§ Katie Eichler received an excellent rating in acting.

§ Brelyn Holmes received a superior rating in costume design, with special thanks to Katie Eichler for acting as her model. Brelyn also received a good rating in solo musical theatre.

§ Emily Kiser received a good rating in solo musical theatre.

§ Maryjoy Lepak received a good rating in solo musical theatre.

§ Patrick McLeer received a superior rating in publicity design and will advance to nationals.

§ Ben Novotny received a good rating in solo musical theatre.

§ Matt Polowczuk received an excellent rating in solo acting, an excellent rating in mime, and honorable mention for best acting.

§ Josh Smith received a fair rating in acting.

§ Danielle Statuto received an excellent rating in costume design.


Knights and Lady Knights Capture Conference Titles - Posted: 2006-02-21

Congratulations to the St. Joseph’s Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls Basketball Teams on being named Conference Champions in tournament action on Saturday night, February 18. The Varsity Boys, undefeated in conference play, defeated Greenwood Christian School for the title by a score of 57-41. Juniors Will Swoyer and Ben Coffey were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Swoyer being named MVP. Senior Matt Conley and Will Swoyer were both named All-Conference Players, with Conley being named Conference Player of the Year. The Lady Knights entered their region conference tournament against number one seed Greenwood Christian School. The Lady Knights were victorious in a double overtime win by a score of 64-62. Junior Emily Dziad was named an All Tournament Player and classmate Abbey Moon was awarded the Tournament MVP. Senior Katie Koshis and Abbey Moon were named All Conference Players. State playoff action begins this weekend with the first round of play for the girls scheduled for Friday, February 24 at Heathwood Hall School in Columbia. The first round of playoff action for the boys will be Saturday, February 25 at Wilson Hall School in Sumter.

 


Sixth Grader Wins Knights of Columbus State Contest - Posted: 2006-02-17

Congratulations to SJCS sixth grader Krysten Bray who recently captured first place on the state level in the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest. Her entry was selected from all the entries in the 8-11 age group statewide in the alcohol abuse category. Krysten received a $50.00 cash prize and her poster is now eligible to compete on the international level. Representatives from the K of C George L. Gagnon Council 8182 were at the school on Tuesday, February 14, to present Krysten her award. In addition, the following students also received awards:

§ Recognized in the 8-11 age group: Alcohol Awareness, Krysten Bray, First Place and Bernadette Wersinger, Second Place; Drug Awareness, Abby Johnson, First Place and Tyler Lagnese, Second Place. Overall winners receiving a cash prize in the 8-11 age group were Abby Johnson ($50.00), First Place and Krysten Bray ($25.00), Second Place.

§ Recognized in the 12-14 age group: Alcohol Awareness, Carly Hudson, First Place and Peter Schattemann, Second Place; Drug Awareness, Andrew Anderson, First Place and Will Godby, Second Place. Senior Named First Runner Up in Regional Shakespeare Competition - Posted: 2006-02-15

Congratulations to SJCS senior Sally Cade Holmes who placed as First Runner Up in the Regional Shakespeare Competition held on Tuesday, February 14, at Warehouse Theatre. As the winner of the School Division Competition held in January, Sally Cade represented St. Joseph’s from among the winners of eleven schools with an overall total of 100 students who competed. She performed a monologue of Phoebe in "As You Like It" before a panel of three judges at the Regional Competition. This was St. Joseph's third year attending the competition and second year placing in the top three.

  


Wrestlers Earn State Titles - Posted: 2006-02-14

 

Congratulations to SJCS senior Russ Weems and junior Philip Hearn on being named State Wrestling Champs in their respective weight class at the South Carolina Independent School Association State Wrestling Meet held on Saturday, February 4 in Columbia. Out of the seven teams that competed at the meet, Philip Hearn was also named "Most Outstanding Wrestler."

 


Faculty Member Named Again to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" - Posted: 2006-02-13

Congratulations to SJCS faculty member Mrs. Anita Winn who has again been selected for inclusion in the tenth edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Teachers are nominated for this honor by making a difference in the lives of one of their students. Only 5% of the nation's teachers are honored in each edition and less than 2% are included in more than one edition. Mrs. Winn teaches seventh grade math and history at St. Joseph's.

  


Middle School Receives "Best New School" Award at Math Competition - Posted: 2006-02-10

SJCS Middle School students entered the Math Counts Competition at Clemson University for the first time on Saturday, February 4. The team placed in the top third and was awarded a trophy for being the "Best New School" attending the competition. The competition, sponsored by the Piedmont Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers, included more than 20 teams with over 175 students present. Eighth grader Connor Bolton ranked seventh and Jeremy Mehl ranked fourteenth out of all the competitors. Connor also participated in the final Countdown Round, which was open to the eight highest scoring students. In addition to Connor and Jeremy, students participating included Michael Boodle, Alex Davidson, Kaitlyn Dunphy, Ricky Schosky, Srivatsan Sudarshan, Alan Thomas, and Arianna Wise. The team is coached by SJCS faculty members Mrs. Anne Gragtmans and Mrs. Anita Winn.

 


National Merit Semi-Finalists Named As Finalists - Posted: 2006-02-09

 

St. Joseph’s Catholic School National Merit Semi-Finalists Caitlin McLear and Carrie Powers have now advanced to Finalist standing in the Merit Scholarship competition by demonstrating, through their distinguished performance, high potential for future academic accomplishment. They will be notified in March 2006 of their standing as Merit Scholarship winners.

 


Middle School Students Post High ITBS Scores - Posted: 2006-02-08

 SJCS middle school students recently received their results from the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS).  Students took these tests during the week of October 10-13, 2005. Of the 177 middle school students who tested, seventy-two percent scored above the 75th percentile for Core Total, which is a combination of Reading, Language, and Math totals.  Fifty-eight percent scored in the 90th percentile or higher for Reading and/or Math. Sixty-two percent of the 6th grade class had at least one score of 95th percentile or higher on an individual sub-test qualifying them for participation in Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) this coming Fall 2006.

 


Junior Qualifies For All State Band - Posted: 2006-02-07

Congratulations to SJCS junior Morgan Klinzing who qualified for the South Carolina All State Band by auditioning on January 28 at Lexington High School in Lexington, SC and as a result of her participation in the Region Band Competition January 21 at Greer High School. As part of these competitions, she was required to know specific terms, scales, sight-reading, and play a selected portion of a piece selected by the committee. This is the fifth year St. Joseph's students have participated in this event.

St. Joseph’s Catholic School Middle School Quiz Bowl Team won the South Carolina Independent School Association Regional Quiz Bowl Championship in Columbia on February 1. Their score qualified them for the honor of being designated the top seeded team at the State Championship on February 21 in Orangeburg, SC. High School Math Team Captures State Championship - Posted: 2006-01-27

The St. Joseph’s Catholic School Math Team captured first place in the State Math Meet held on Thursday, January 26 in Orangeburg, SC. The event, sponsored by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA), included the following schools: Ashley Hall, Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Dillon Christian, First Baptist of Charleston, Heathwood Hall, Hilton Head Prep, Laurence Manning, Northwood Academy, Orangeburg Prep, Pee Dee Academy, Pinewood Prep, Richard Winn, St. Andrew’s on the Marsh, St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Carolina Academy, Thomas Sumter, Williamsburg, and Wilson Hall. 

St. Joseph’s entered two teams, which placed first and fourth respectively, out of more than 25 teams representing 18 schools. Team members included Daniel DeMars, Nicole Azores Gococo, John Hill, Morgan Klinzing, Jennifer Mayernik, Caitlin McLear, Brandon Miller, Carrie Powers, Margo Toney, and Russ Weems. The Math Team also received awards at the individual level:  senior Caitlin McLear was awarded a medal for placing in the Top Ten and senior Russ Weems and junior John Hill earned second and third place respectively in individual high scorer awards as well as medals for top scorer on their individual teams. Over 100 students competed in the event.  Mr. George Carr and Mrs. Mary Beth Hart, SJCS Math Team faculty moderators, accompanied the students to Orangeburg.

 


St. Joseph’s Senior Named Player of the Year - Posted: 2006-01-26

St. Joseph’s Catholic School senior Matt Conley was recently named the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Player of the Year for fall soccer. Matt received this award at a banquet honoring All State Players on January 14. Matt played the position of sweeper, which is the last defender before the goalie. The St. Joseph’s Knights, who captured the SCISA 3A State Title this past fall, had an overall team record of 12-0 with only four goals scored against them. Matt was the Team Captain and was awarded the Coach's Award for his leadership and diligence. In addition to being a soccer standout, Matt recently scored a career high 30 points for the Knights basketball team leading his team to their sixth consecutive win in mid January against undefeated Richard Winn Academy.

Senior Selected as School Division Winner in National Shakespeare Competition - Posted: 2006-01-19

St. Joseph’s Catholic School senior Sally Cade Holmes won the School Division Competition of the 2006 National Shakespeare Competition. Sally Cade was judged by a panel of five faculty members during a recent school-wide assembly performing Phoebe in "As You Like It." She will present this monologue and a sonnet at the Regional Shakespeare Competition to be held Tuesday, February 14 at 7:15 P.M. at the Warehouse Theatre in Greenville. This will be St. Joseph's third year attending the competition. Last year, SJCS alumni Laura Gragtmans was selected the winner of the Regional Shakespeare Competition and won an all-expense paid trip to compete in the national competition in New York City.


SJCS Softball Players Capture Tournament Championship - Posted: 2006-01-18

A belated congratulations to nine SJCS high school softball players, who along with girls from J.L. Mann, Mauldin, and Woodmont High Schools, ended a nine-week softball league this past fall as tournament champions. The girls played together in the Hot Corner High School Softball league on a team known as "The Heartbreakers." St. Joseph’s softball players Leanne Bernandez, Christen Clinkscales, Katie Dutch, Kelly Eppinger, Christine Laskowski, Ashton Lesiak, Brittany Nichols, Amber Sagedy, and Hannah Sagedy played teams from T.L. Hanna, Riverside, Mauldin, Belton, Westside, and Greenwood High Schools. SJCS junior Ashton Lesiak was presented a plaque that named her MVP of the league.

Middle School Students Perform Well at Regional Spelling Bee - Posted: 2006-01-13

      

Congratulations to the SJCS middle school students who represented the school on Thursday, January 12 at the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Regional Spelling Bee held at Laurens Academy. Sixth grade representatives Mitchell Jones and Daniel Sokol, as well as eighth grade representative Kailey Bray, were named as finalists and will be competing in the SCISA State Spelling Bee on February 15 at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree, SC. Eighth grade representative Alex Davidson finished third overall and both seventh grade representatives Clark Burgess and Kaitlyn Dunphy made it to their final round. Mr. Joel Brandon, SJCS seventh grade literature teacher, accompanied the students to the regional competition.

SJCS nominated for American High School Theatre Festival - Posted: 2006-01-05

The St. Joseph's Catholic School Fine Arts Department has been nominated by the Southeastern Theatre Conference to represent the United States at the 2007 American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. AHSTF is a collaboration of the finest American high school drama departments, showcasing the nation's best programs at the world's largest performing arts festival. Applications will be ranked by AHSTF's Board of Advisors, consisting of prominent collegiate theatre professionals, and winners will be notified in April 2006.


Lady Knights Victorious at Holiday Invitational - Posted: 2005-12-22

Four ladies teams, Greenville Tech Charter School, Siloam Christian School, Southside Christian School, and St. Joseph’s Catholic School competed on Monday, December 19 in the Southside Christian Christmas Invitational Tournament.  The final game, matching St. Joseph’s Lady Knights against the Southside Christian Lady Cougars, kept fans on the edge of their seats. But in the end, the Lady Knights proved victorious.
