The SJCS volleyball team rallied from one set down and then from 23-19 down in the fourth set to defeat visiting Andrew Jackson 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-23) in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs Monday night.
The Knights (26-12) will play Region 3 champion Gray Collegiate Academy in Columbia in the third round at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
St. Joe’s lost the first set against Andrew Jackson, won the next two, but trailed 23-19 in the fourth. However, sophomore Maggie Patterson served out the set with six straight points, including two of her three aces. She also had 10 digs in the match.
The Knights were led by freshman Emily Normand, who had 21 kills, and senior Sydney Nobarak, who had 16 kills, 12 digs and an ace. Sophomore Kimmie Thompson had 39 assists and 10 digs.
Senior Elizabeth Tamura had a team-high 36 digs and four aces. Sophomore Maja Hawthorne contributed two aces.
The team had 85 digs and 11 aces in all.
The SJCS girls tennis team, runner-up in Region 1-2A, went on the road and defeated Region 2-2A champion Abbeville 6-1 Monday in a first-round Class 2A playoff match.
The Knights will travel to Hartsville Wednesday for a second-round match against Region 1-2A champion Governor’s School.
