The SJCS varsity boys tennis team hosted Class 5A Riverside Wednesday and battled past the Warriors, 4-3.
Nick Loudermilk (6-3, 6-0 at No. 1), Patrick Reese (6-2, 6-4 at No. 2) and Matthew Jacques (5-7, 7-5, 10-2 at No. 4) posted singles victories for the Knights, and Loudermilk and Reese clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.
SJCS coach Ken Arp also praised the performance of seventh-grader Nolan Curran, who lost in a third-set tie-breaker and almost pulled off “a very cool upset.”
“The other coach was impressed by his play at his age,” Arp said.
The Knights opened the season with a 7-0 win over Southside Christian on Tuesday.
Julia Slaughter hit a two-run homer, and the visiting Knights defeated Eastside for the second time in three days, 13-10.
Kendall Harvey went the distance and struck out six and also had four hits for St. Joe’s (2-0), and Brelana Pham scored the go-ahead run on a delayed steal of home in the sixth inning.
Slaughter and Emily Gushue had two hits apiece, and Maggie Olewiler, Maddie Wells, Natalia Montes, Olivia Fleming and Emma Cumby each had one hit for the Knights.
