COVID-19 UPDATE: SJCS SUSPENDING REGULAR CLASSES MARCH 16-31
Dear St. Joseph’s Catholic School Families,
This letter is to inform you that we are suspending regular classes beginning Monday, March 16th through March 31st per Governor McMaster’s order this afternoon. We will use Monday as a day of preparation for transitioning to online teaching, which will begin on Tuesday, March 17th.
The school building will be open from 9 to 11 AM on Monday morning for students to get their textbooks, chromebooks, and any other materials they will need for virtual schooling. To avoid everyone being in the building at the same time, we are asking middle school students to come to school between 9 and 10 AM tomorrow and high schoolers from 10 to 11 AM. Of course, middle and high school siblings may come to school together during either of those times.
Chromebooks will be distributed to 6th and 7th graders in the library beginning at 9 AM. It is important that all 6th and 7th graders get a personal Chromebook during this time for they will need Chromebooks to participate in online classes.
All students will need to be off campus by 11 AM on Monday. The building will be closed to students and parents at that time until we return to regular classes.
Students will receive an email Monday afternoon (between 3 and 4 PM) with instructions for online learning which will begin on Tuesday morning, including the schedule for online classes. Classes will meet online on alternating days, according to an A schedule and B schedule. When an online class is in session, students in that class are expected to be logged into their Chromebooks using the class code provided by the teacher and ready to go, with class materials at hand. Because students will see each other and the teacher during online class sessions, dress down day guidelines apply. This will be explained in greater detail in the email Monday afternoon to the students.
Given that this is the first time we have conducted online classes, there will no doubt be some troubleshooting along the way. We ask that everyone have a willing, adventuresome, can-do spirit and is diligent in following instructions. Most questions and problems should be able to be resolved by communicating with the teachers of each class. For more global problems and concerns that may surface, please reach out to the division directors, Dr. Jones or Mrs. Jaraczewski.
With the cessation of classes and the closure of the school building during these days, all after-school activities, events, meetings, athletics (games, practices, and workouts), and arts programing (including rehearsals for the spring musical) are canceled until we return to normal classes.
One final thing: online classes will not meet on Monday and Tuesday, March 23rd and 24th, as school was not scheduled to be in session on those days. The timing is good, as it will give us an opportunity to make any needed adjustments to the online platform.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued flexibility as we move into uncharted territory. We will keep you informed of any developments and our plans for returning to school as the situation becomes more clear in the days ahead.
Our prayers are with all those already impacted by COVID-19 and for all those fighting the spread of this virus. St. Joseph, Foster Father of Jesus Christ, please keep us, our loved ones, and all those particularly susceptible to this virus safe, and give us a speedy return to school.
In Christ’s love and peace,
Keith Kiser, Headmaster
