Jan 10, 2020

SJCS eighth-grader Sophie Stancel has been selected to perform in the opening ceremony for the 2020 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, N.C., at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 24.

Coverage of the Championships is scheduled to begin that night at 8 p.m., and a brief segment from the opening ceremony is scheduled to be shown during the women’s freestyle event. In addition, US Figure Skating will have a live feed of the opening ceremony.

More than 50 girls are involved in the production. Sophie (center in the photo) has been training with a group in Charlotte on numerous weekends since September. Another group has been practicing in Greensboro, and all will skate together during the opening ceremony to music from the movie “La La Land.”
