ROUNDUP: GIRLS VARSITY RALLIES AGAINST BLACKSBURG

Emily Meade scored 22 points, and the SJCS girls varsity basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat host Blacksburg 59-55 in a Region 1-2A game Friday night.

Meade scored 14 points to help the Knights take a 27-21 halftime lead, but Blacksburg surged to a 41-40 advantage after three quarters.

Meade scored six points, Mady Duwe five and Brittany Morris and Essence Thompson four apiece in the fourth quarter to help the Knights come from behind and take over sole possession of second place in the region with a record of 4-1.

Duwe finished with 13 points, Morris and Brigid Stanton with eight each, Thompson with six and Jamison White with two points.

Boys Varsity

The SJCS boys staged a furious fourth-quarter comeback against host Blacksburg Tuesday night but eventually lost a heartbreaker in double overtime, 79-68.

The Knights trailed by nine points with two minutes remaining in regulation and by five with 55 seconds left before tying the score at 57-57 to send the game into overtime.

Jackson Gore, who scored nine of his 25 points in the two overtimes, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer of the first overtime to tie the score at 65-65. The Wildcats then outscored the Knights 14-3 in the second extra period.

Ben Saunders led St. Joe’s with 22 points. Daniel Watson added 15 points, Jalen Gibson 14 and Gannon Stockton 11. Kyle Lonergan had four points and Davis Satterfield two points.

6th Grade Boys

The SJCS fought hard but lost to visiting Lead Academy 29-19 on Tuesday afternoon.

Charlie Walters led the Knights with seven points. Pierce Jones, Luka Kucinic, Meyer Hoover-Dempsey, Brodie Miller, Vine Stanton and Sam Utecht each scored two points.
