The SJCS volleyball team is still in the running for a ninth consecutive state championship.
St. Joseph’s won the battle of the Knights Monday night, defeating visiting North Central 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 25-16) in the Class 2A Upper State championship.
St. Joe’s (28-12) will play for its ninth straight state title when it takes on Oceanside Collegiate Academy in the state final at noon Saturday at River Bluff High School in Lexington.
Against North Central, St. Joe’s was led by senior Sydney Nobarak’s double-double of 22 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Emily Normand added 18 kills.
Sophomore Kimmie Thompson had 42 assists, 28 digs, six kills, one ace and one block. Senior Elizabeth Tamura had a team-high 41 digs. Sophomore Maja Hawthorne had two blocks, and eighth-grader Lillie Hecker had 1.5 blocks.
As a team, St Joe’s had 107 digs and seven blocks.

The SJCS girls tennis team advanced to the Upper State championship with a 6-0 victory over host Governors School at Coker University in Hartsville on Monday.
The Knights will play at Christ Church in the Upper State final at 4 p.m. today.
