SPORTS ROUNDUP: KNIGHTS BLANK NINETY SIX, IMPROVE TO 2-0

« 1 of 7 »

The St. Joseph’s football team rode another big defensive effort and defeated Ninety Six 10-0 in its first home game of the season Friday night.

The Knights (2-0), who blanked Carolina through three quarters in their 26-8 season-opening victory last week, recorded a shutout for the third time under second-year coach Jon Wheeler.

Last season, St. Joe’s defeated West-Oak 45-0 in Week 4 and shut out McCormick 23-0 in Week 8.

In their 2019 home debut, the Knights gave ground on the first possession of the game, with Ninety Six driving to the SJCS 25-yard line. But the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs.

On the Knights’ first play from scrimmage, sophomore K.D. Boyd burst through for 49 yards, the key play on a drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown run by junior Mark Lyons.

Freshman Matthew Hall made the point-after kick, and the Knights led 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first quarter.

That was all the scoring until the fourth quarter, when the SJCS defense came up with another big stop at the Wildcats’ 44-yard line with less than eight minutes remaining.

St. Joe’s moved to the Ninety Six 5-yard line, and with a fourth-and-goal situation, Matthew Hall came on and nailed a clinching field goal with 2:41 left in the game.

Fittingly, on a big night for the Knights’ defense, the Wildcats’ last possession ended with a sack by senior Alec Miller.

Next week, St. Joe’s will have its annual Military Appreciation Night when the Knights host the Anderson Cavaliers.
