FOOTBALL BEGINS BIG SPORTS WEEKEND; GIRLS GOLF EARNS VICTORY

The SJCS football team opens its regular season tonight, playing on the road against Carolina High School.

Coach Jon Wheeler’s Knights, with 18 returning starters, are coming off a 5-6 season that included a loss in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Carolina High.

It’s the start of a big weekend for SJCS athletics.

The Knights volleyball team will be playing in the Showdown at Sunsphere tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., today and Saturday.

The SJCS swim team will compete in the Splashdown Invitational at the Greenville County Aquatic Complex.

The JV tennis team will play in the Spartanburg tournament at Spartanburg High School.

Girls golf team wins tri-match

Led by junior Emma Curran, the St. Joseph’s girls golf team won a tri-match Thursday at Greer Country Club against Greer Middle College and Landrum.

Curran shot a 39 to lead the Knights (4-1) to a 173 total, four shots better than GMC. Landrum finished third with at 201.

Junior Kaitlyn Dumit fired a 43 while juniors Reagan Lillibridge and Caleigh Noonan shot 45 and 46, respectively. Freshman Marett Cole carded a 47, marking only the second time in program history that the top five golfers all posted sub-50 scores. Seventh-grader Meghan Noonan also competed and finished with a 67.

The Knights next play on the road against Wren Monday, Aug. 26 at Southern Oaks in Easley.
