St. Joseph’s Wins 2018 2A Carlisle Cup
We are thrilled to announce that for the second year in row, St. Joseph’s has been awarded the Carlisle Cup (formerly the Directors Cup) for Class 2A by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association. The runner up was Academic Magnet, only 30 points behind. This award is a testament to the outstanding work of all our student athletes, coaches, staff, volunteers, and the support of all who came out to cheer!
On Friday May 11 at Irmo High School, the boys soccer team, for the second match in a row, went into a penalty kick shootout after playing 80 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of overtime to a 0-0 tie. Unfortunately, we came out on the losing end of the 4-3 final score to Academic Magnet HS. It was an outstanding run for our boys and Coach Kucinic, especially after being the underdog for the last couple of matches. Congratulations to Coach K and all the guys on their State Runner-up finish!
On Saturday May 12, the previously undefeated boys tennis team were defeated by Academic Magnet HS for the State Championship by a score of 5-2, with many going into tie breakers. Coach Kevin Meyer and his team set a number of school records this year including their best-ever finish in the state playoffs. After the State Tournament, Nick Loudermilk tied for 3rd in the state singles tournament (AAA-AA-A) in Cayce. He lost a close match in the semifinals of the main draw and they ended up cancelling the 3rd place match because of rain. Maclean Armstrong made it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket in the tournament. Congratulations to Coach Meyer and the whole team for an extraordinary year!
Also on Saturday, members of the girls and boys Track and Field teams competed in the State Championship Meet at Spring Valley. Our girls team finished the meet in 3rd place. Ava Dobson was an individual winner in the 1600 and the 3200 meter runs and our 4 x 800 meter relay team also won their event. On the boys side, the SJCS Knights won the State Championship for the second year in a row by scoring 31 points more than second place Woodland HS! Braydon Bennett won both the 110 meter and 400 meter hurdles. Our 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 meter relay teams were also winners. Congratulations to Coach George Carr and all of our track athletes! Additionally, congratulations to Coach George Carr for being selected the South Carolina High School League Class AA Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year by the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association!
We had two members of our boys golf team qualify to participate as individuals in the Class AA State Tournament that was held the past two days in North Augusta. Yesterday’s second round was canceled due to rain. So, the standings were determined by the first day results. Ben Loudermilk shot a score of 2 over par 74 to finish in a tie for 7th place and was also named to the All-State team and Ryan Gorman finished in a tie for 17th with a score of 77. Congratulations to both golfers!
