Varsity Basketball Triple-Overtime Win over CCES

Tuesday January 9, 2018 is one for the record books! Coach Paul Assinesi and his Varsity Knights claimed a 63-61 victory at the end of a grueling triple-overtime game, coming right down to a missed last-chance buzzer shot by athletic rival Christ Church. Junior Weeks Poole nailed the three that sent the game into overtime. Senior Emilio Trocha scored with four seconds left to tie the score in the first overtime, and junior Walker Pace sunk two free throws to make it 57-57 in the last two minutes of the second overtime. Finally,  junior Connor Bailey put the Knights up 63-61 with seconds left in the third overtime, winning the game as CCES was unable to answer with their final shot.

Bob Castello with The Greenville News covered the game and quoted Coach Paul regarding the rivalry game saying “This one’s like being at Duke-(North) Carolina,” Assinesi said. “You’re right in each other’s back yard, and it’s a strong rivalry in every sport you do. To come out on top is great, but to have that kind of game is greater.

“If it’s a blowout, it doesn’t matter. But a rivalry is when you go back and forth, and to go to triple (overtime) is the epitome of a game. And if he hits the three at the end, we lose, but it becomes an even better game.”
